U.S. Troops to Head to Pakistan

Just exactly what we need. A buncha US special forces roaming freely in our country and killing at will. This will go very well with the people.
Link to the story

Beginning early next year, U.S. Special Forces are expected to vastly expand their presence in Pakistan, as part of an effort to train and support indigenous counter-insurgency forces and clandestine counterterrorism units, according to defense officials involved with the planning.

These Pakistan-centric operations will mark a shift for the U.S. military and for U.S. Pakistan relations. In the aftermath of Sept. 11, the U.S. used Pakistani bases to stage movements into Afghanistan. Yet once the U.S. deposed the Taliban government and established its main operating base at Bagram, north of Kabul, U.S. forces left Pakistan almost entirely. Since then, Pakistan has restricted U.S. involvement in cross-border military operations as well as paramilitary operations on its soil.

But the Pentagon has been frustrated by the inability of Pakistani national forces to control the borders or the frontier area. And Pakistan’s political instability has heightened U.S. concern about Islamic extremists there.

According to Pentagon sources, reaching a different agreement with Pakistan became a priority for the new head of the U.S. Special Operations Command, Adm. Eric T. Olson. Olson visited Pakistan in August, November and again this month, meeting with Pakistani President Pervez Musharraf, Pakistani Joint Chiefs of Staff Committee Chairman Gen. Tariq Majid and Lt. Gen. Muhammad Masood Aslam, commander of the military and paramilitary troops in northwest Pakistan. Olson also visited the headquarters of the Frontier Corps, a separate paramilitary force recruited from Pakistan’s border tribes.

Now, a new agreement, reported when it was still being negotiated last month, has been finalized. And the first U.S. personnel could be on the ground in Pakistan by early in the new year, according to Pentagon sources.
U.S. Central Command Commander Adm. William Fallon alluded to the agreement and spoke approvingly of Pakistan’s recent counterterrorism efforts in an interview with Voice of America last week.

“What we’ve seen in the last several months is more of a willingness to use their regular army units,” along the Afghan border, Fallon said. “And this is where, I think, we can help a lot from the U.S. in providing the kind of training and assistance and mentoring based on our experience with insurgencies recently and with the terrorist problem in Iraq and Afghanistan, I think we share a lot with them, and we’ll look forward to doing that.”

If Pakistan actually follows through, perhaps 2008 will be a better year.

Re: U.S. Troops to Head to Pakistan

Alhamdulilallah. Just exactly what Pakistan needs. More training for the Pakistani troops the better. Long may the US/Pakistan cooperation continue. :k:

Re: U.S. Troops to Head to Pakistan

^^ Army Stratgic force just fired hatf 7 missile, might be message to certain powers while President is out of country.
The day President allow foregin forces on Pakistan soil I will love to hang him with my own hands.

Re: U.S. Troops to Head to Pakistan

I think your concerns are based on similar US training role in South American countries like Cloumbia. Once US troops are on the ground as advisers and trainers, they can easily get involved in direct fire fights.

And that may be true.

However the differences between Pakistan and Columbian army are many. So fear not. Law enforcement will remain primary responsibility of Pakistan army or paramilitary. The reason is simple. The shear numbers of Pak army are good enough to put boots on the ground.

I think it is our mistake to keep US troops and Pak troops locked across the Pak-Afghan border thus pitting them against each other. There Afghan Northern Alliance folks can do their propaganda against Pakistanis on 24 hour basis.

Once US troops are on Pakistani side, the situation will be much more balanced.

Pakistan army shouldn't stop at just getting US troops on Pak side. Our next step should be to enter Afghanistan's south and East.

We must encircle Taliban Jihadis from Afghan and Pakistan sides using a force that is 99% Pakistani and 1% or lower Americans. That's the only way to kill off Waziri and Bajori problem.

Re: U.S. Troops to Head to Pakistan

Yes and lets have them our nukes and let them spy on our country as freely as ever. And then lets parol “Hindustan Jindabad!”. Thats what you stand for, right?!

Re: U.S. Troops to Head to Pakistan

When you say let them spy 'as freely as ever', it means they are already spying freely - so what is the problem? USA/Pakistan bhai bhai. :)

Re: U.S. Troops to Head to Pakistan

Whatever our differences are but on this issue,!sorry no bs, no foregin forces on Pak soil. If mush is true patriot which he is then no forgien military presence will be in Pakistan..

Re: U.S. Troops to Head to Pakistan

@ Aalsi:
Well when you have traitors in Army like Musharraf, why would It be a surprising news for YOU!

Re: U.S. Troops to Head to Pakistan

Have the troops arrived yet, and has the operation by the US forces from Pakistani soil within Pakistan started yet? Let us know when it does. :)

Re: U.S. Troops to Head to Pakistan

There's a been a significant foreign military presence in pakistan for over 5 years - the USA leased a number of PAF bases in Pakistan as logistics hubs for the Afghanistan campaign. This was pretty widely mentioned in Pakistani newspapers and discussed on Gupshup in the past.

Other foreign forces have trained with the Pakistani army in Pakistan too - British Army regiments that have special relationships with Pakistani regiments sometimes send soldiers to train with the Pakistani army.

Just as I'm ok with foreign troops coming to Pakistan to train with the Pakistan Army, I don't have any problem with foreign troops coming to Pakistan to train the Pakistani forces.

If US troops are used for combat operations in Pakistan, on the other hand, then I have a problem with it. Outsourcing your domestic counter-insurgency war to another country is utterly dishonourable.

Re: U.S. Troops to Head to Pakistan

@Aalsi, I think this post provides you with answers on your question.

GV,
I doubt that there will be no direct use of US troops in operations. Since this paragraph should be taken very serious:

Best practise is training "on-mission". Without a helping hand, how will you train to perfection?

Re: U.S. Troops to Head to Pakistan

if that gets the job of tackling extermists forces done more efficiently and in a shorter span of time then more powers to americans. Lets have some Americans die for us, we've had enough Pak army soldiers killed in the last 3-4 yrs without any effective results on the ground so far. Pak Army strategy has been so far reactionary, they produce some knee jerk reaction and then go back to slumber, seeking peace deals, jirgas and all that bull crap simply to avoid fighting a bunch of ragtag militia force.

Re: U.S. Troops to Head to Pakistan

This is nothing new. US has been training and arming the Pakistani military ever since Pakistan was created. This is presnted as a story now for the ignorants to eat up.

Re: U.S. Troops to Head to Pakistan

:rotfl: yeah… there is no militancy in Afghanistan where they have been sitting for how many years now? :hmmm:

Re: U.S. Troops to Head to Pakistan

They are smoking hashish … in Afghanistan .. how can they win.. when their guns use by talibans in night and in the morning by them for media posing.. Pathetic American Forces.. . :shoaby: ..

Re: U.S. Troops to Head to Pakistan

I don't think American forces are pathetic. Lets give the credit where it is due. American forces i thinkk are best force in the world. They may actually be better than rest of the world combined.

They certain;y are the most experienced of the present time and best equipped. I don't think other forces like China or Germany or France who have not had a war in decades can come anywhere near them in professionalism and effectiveness.

Re: U.S. Troops to Head to Pakistan

Do Foreign Forces also include Arab and Central Asian Jihadists hiding in our border areas?

Re: U.S. Troops to Head to Pakistan

Interesting. Any specifics on exactly where they'll be located, and what restrictions they'll have on them? Are we seeing American soldiers on American bases, or will they be patrolling the streets? This could easily blow up in their faces.

Re: U.S. Troops to Head to Pakistan

Good point. Yet some of the people complaining about the US forces training Pakistani forces, will not complain about these Arab and Central Asian forces fighting against the Pakistanis.
