BAGHDAD (Reuters) - Al-Jazeera television says 15 Iraqis have been killed and about 50 wounded overnight when U.S. troops fired on a crowd in the town of Falluja, 50 km (30 miles) west of Baghdad.

The report, which followed an initial report of 10 dead and 70 hurt, could not immediately be independently confirmed. The channel, widely watched across the Arab world, did not initially specify the source of its information.

U.S. Central Command in Qatar said on Tuesday it had no information and U.S. Army commanders in Baghdad were unavailable to comment.

Jazeera’s Baghdad correspondent, speaking on air by telephone, said U.S. forces opened fire around midnight after someone in the crowd threw a stone at them.

He said a group, numbering up to 200, had finished Muslim evening prayers at a mosque and answered a call by preachers to protest against the continued presence of U.S. troops in Iraq.

He said he did not have an exact number for the injured who were being treated at five different hospitals in Falluja.

U.S. troops were widely welcomed for overthrowing Saddam Hussein but many Iraqis are now anxious for them to go home.

US troops shot dead 13 Iraqis, at least six of them children, during a protest to mark Saddam Hussein (news - web sites)'s birthday, overshadowing the surrender of a key weapons advisor to the toppled president.

Witnesses in the town of Fallujah, west of Baghdad, told AFP that US troops had opened fire late Monday on demonstrators celebrating Saddam’s 66th birthday, killing 13 and wounding 45.

“The shooting broke out when 500 protestors carrying portraits of Saddam and Iraqi flags approached a school manned by US troops,” said Mohammed Hamid, a resident of the town, 50 kilometres (30 miles) west of the capital.

Another witness who asked not to be identified said the US soldiers were “not threatened by the demonstrators.”

Of the 13, dead who were swiftly buried Tuesday in accordance with Islamic tradition, six were children aged just seven or eight, the second witness said.

May a hundred American troops die for each child they have murdered.

M-16 assault rifles, standard issue to US troops, are aimed from sights that impart accuracy out to many hundreds of yards. This cannot be written of as mere collateral damage. M-16s are remarkably accurate guns - draw your own conclusions from this fact.

I wonder what excuses we will hear now for this latest war crime by the American occupation forces? Once again they have mercilessly slaughtered Iraqi protestors - another example of how the American's don't at all believe in Iraqi freedom. Once again they have murdered children. Criminals.

I'm starting to understand why the USA didn't sign up to the ICC. With their troops gunning down little kids with accurate assualt rifles, it's no freaking wonder that they don't want their people to be tried by an independent body for war crimes.

13 Iraqis killed after American troops opened fire on them

6 of them were children...they were protesting against the american presence....I heard from the news on TV.....any further info on that?

USA aint there to liberate anyone!!, bucnh of cowards just wanna have the oil. Iragiz are just having to pay that price with there BLOOD now !!!!

I guess that in your eyes justifies yet another American army slaughter of Iraqi protestors, including innocent children? Carry on making excuses for the growing number of war crimes committed in the name of your country.

Two points:

First if they wanted to celebrate Saddams birthday then why not, who are your soldiers to stop them. Remember you never tire of telling us that you fought the war to give them freedom. I would have thought it includes freedom of expression as well, or are the invaders now scared that sadddam was not that unpopular after all.

*Secondly, both BBC anf Sky news said that the protest was mainly due to the fact that the invaders had taken over the local school as their place of residence and the locals wanted them out of there in order that their children could go back to the school. *

Yet another example of US occupation troops using civilian installations for military purposes. Shameful.

This is sad...only the american ppl have freedom of speech/expression

They were fired upon. Those who hide behind children and fire on soldiers are shameful and despicable.

That's getting a rather tiring and shameful excuse now. But carry on making excuses for the child-killing US occupation army in Iraq, becuase no one else is convinced - neither the Iraqi people, the independent media or anyone else except the US army.

Its one way to tell people to stop protesting.

Thats a lame excuse. More lies by the invaders. Stones were thrown yes, but no one fired at them. Dont believe everything you hear on fox news and CNN. After all they told us Basra fell on the scond day of the war.

Secondly the Iraqis didnt invite you there, you went and invaded them and have occupied their country. They have every right to resist the occupation forces. However, it seems that as usual your trigger happy invaders shoot first and ask questions later.

No, they were fired upon by Iraqi's.

yes utd.. those six little kids fired at the brave American soldiers who reserve the right to retaliate to stones with bullets..

this is soooo Israel it's scary... and the Americans blindly fell for it.

They were in the crowd when they fired upon the U.S. forces, hiding behind children and innocents, rather pathetic, but expected at this point.
