U.S. Says Iraq Shot Down Unmanned Drone

WASHINGTON - Iraqi aircraft shot down a U.S. unmanned surveillance drone over southern Iraq on Monday, American military officials said.

The Predator drone was conducting a reconnaissance mission, Joint Chiefs of Staff Chairman Gen. Richard Myers told a Pentagon (news - web sites) news conference. The plane is presumed a total loss, he said.

“They got a lucky shot today, and they brought down the predator,” Myers said.

Iraqi fighter aircraft penetrated the southern no-fly zone over the country and fired on the Predator, and its controllers then lost contact with the plane, U.S. officials said. …

“predator” where do they get these silly names from :bukbuk:

Its like there super plane Stealth bomber stealth huh ok so no one can see it because it stealth so what is this then Stealth Bomber is good Burning Material ! :bukbuk:

once in a while even the blind shooters get lucky.

Good. The US-imposed "no-fly" zones are illegal under international law anyway, and no UN resolution sanctions them at all.

Re: U.S. Says Iraq Shot Down Unmanned Drone

It’s called defence, every country is permitted to defend its borders. As Malik has pointed out the “no-fly” zones are not even mandated by any Council Resolution. Far from being set up to ‘protect’ the individuals residing there, they have actually claimed the lives of 144 individuals, injuring 446 others.

If the US continues to threaten Iraq, then the latter possesses all the right in the world to defend itself. It is a sovereign country, nothing less.

Re: Re: U.S. Says Iraq Shot Down Unmanned Drone

Exactly. Rememeber a few weeks ago Saddam’s old drinking buddy Rumsfeld tried to intimate that violations of these “no-fly zones” would mean a material branch by Iraq? The UN Secretray-General promptly slapped him down, and said that was certainly not the case. After that the Americans have never mentioned it - knowing full well that these are not covered by any UN resolution.

Re: Re: Re: U.S. Says Iraq Shot Down Unmanned Drone

So true, Malik :k: Thanks for reminding me about this. Would the US stand by and allow another country to threaten its sovereignty? i think not. These ‘no-fly’ zones were established not with the intention of defending any hapless group of people in Iraq - whether Kurds or Shiite rebels. It’s a unilateral act, instigated by the US, with no backing whatsoever from any Council Resolution. The US should expect that it will come under fire if it continues its illegal raids over Iraq’s airspace. You threaten a country’s sovereignty, you have to pay the consequences. Period.

Great, I always knew Iraq could defeat America in war. :hehe:

Iraq knows that the United States will attack no matter what they do. So Iraq is being more aggressive, and I think thats right. Its time Iraq starts being Aggressive with the "No Fly Zones." becasue USA kills innocent civilians by bombing because accorinding to the USA, Iraq always shots at its airplanes.

Yes, kinda like the 1991 Gulf War, when people though Iraq would win ;)

This is a year-old article, but thought would include it in this thread as it discusses some of the legal aspects of these ‘no-fly’ zones… Always useful to know precisely what is, and is not, sanctioned by the United Nations.

This time they are "alone" a bunch of monarch a$$es won't help much but no win though for IRAQ.

Isn’t that the point of an unmanned drone? You could shoot them down and not lose a life. So what’s the big freakin deal? :hehe:

And incidentally these are the same people who thought the Taliban would win :rotfl:
