U.S next step

US troops will be deployed in Pakistan if the nation’s nuclear installations come under threat from terrorists out to avenge the killing of Osama bin Laden, the Sunday Express can reveal on Sunday.

The plan, which would be activated without President Asif Ali Zardari’s consent, provoked an angry reaction from Pakistan officials last night. Barack Obama would order troops to parachute in to protect key nuclear missile sites. These include the air force’s central Sargodha HQ, home base for nuclear-capable F-16 combat aircraft and at least 80 ballistic missiles.

A US source told the Sunday Express: “The plan is green lit and the president has already shown he is wiling to deploy troops in Pakistan if he feels it is important for national security.” However, news of the plan has further increased tension between the US and Pakistan with relations already at an all-time low after the Operation Geronimo raid by the US Navy Seal special forces team that killed bin Laden at the house where he had been hiding in Abbottabad, near to a Pakistan military academy.

An angry Pakistani official said: “Pakistan has an elaborate command and control structure and is fully capable of defending its strategic assets under any circumstances and does not need any assistance from any country, including the US, to safeguard its nuclear installations.”

The plan reflects growing concern over reprisals for the al-Qaeda terror leader’s death. More than 80 people were killed and 140 injured when two Taliban suicide bombers struck at a military academy in the north-western town of Charsadda on Friday.

Alex Neill, of the Royal United Services Institute, said: “The United States places its own national security issues above all other sovereignty issues and trust in Pakistan’s abilities are extremely low.”

“If Obama can persuade congress that placing US troops at the installations is necessary to protect US citizens from possible nuclear attack, then that’s what he will do.” The Pentagon on Saturday refused to deny the existence of the plan, with a spokesman saying only: “We are confident that Pakistan has taken appropriate steps towards securing its nuclear arsenal.”

Re: U.S next step

don't know if this "news" item has any fact behind it but frankly, I hope it is true. Without offending any soverignty or sensibility issues (which is near impossible in this case!) it has to be a concern that if foreigners can do this much covertly within Pakistan, within a km of military centers, why wouldn't local-looking terrorists not be able to cause mischief in nuclear storage.

Re: U.S next step

Why not give contract to run whole of Pakistan to USA , I bet my kidney that both sides will be very happy with that arrangement.

Re: U.S next step

won't work. America doesn't know how to run America these days, so how are they gonna run Pakistan!

What they do well is defence and military. Yes the land of the free and the home of the brave have become masters of providing security. so hire them to safeguard your nuclear assets and Pakistan & ROW can sleep better!

Re: U.S next step

what bakwaas! hahaha she has lost in afghanistan and iraq, what master!

Re: U.S next step

It is not about running efficiently , it is about making both sides happy.

Re: U.S next step

It looks like, there will hardly be any change in the relations. This is short term set back, but in the long term, the love-hate relation will continue. America needs Pakistanis, Pakistanis need America:)

Re: U.S next step

Have we not learned that the attribution of such baseless accusations to an “unnamed US source” leaves this story without a shred of credibility? We have said this before and we will say it again, our government has full confidence in Pakistan’s ability to provide security to their nuclear assets. Conspiracy theorists will say, without any sources, whatever they please, but remember the US and Pakistan are fighting a common enemy. We saw them strike after Usama Bin Laden (UBL) death and kill over 90 innocent Frontier Constabulary cadets in retaliation. Retaliation for UBL, one who was not even a Pakistani. Think, should not our focus be on eliminating this common enemy, rather than wasting our time and energies on conspiracy theories?

We should be looking to better the world and our alliance for the sake of future generations, a task that can only be accomplished if we work together to free ourselves from the threats Taliban and Al-Qaida terrorism.

Look who showed up !

Re: U.S next step

hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha ... I bet troops parachuting without consent into Sargodha air base would get a very very warm welcome.

This alone is proof for me that the source is a fake story. Sargodha is too deep inside Pakistan to be seized and held by paratroopers without them being wiped out in the following days . And it is too sensitive a location for unwanted troops to be allowed to land and wander freely.

And a war with Pakistan benefits the US in no way either, so it ain't happening.

Re: U.S next step

abtabad is army city...creating usama drama there was first step to invade pakistan...this is step 2 i.e "O osama was resting in abtabad ur nukes r not safe we r coming" n once pak nukes r in their hands they will turn it into afghan or iraq...so beware dont let them succeed..stand against them

Re: U.S next step

The same applies to India where a rag tag invaded a city and the first the security services knew about it was when they started creating mayhem. Think before you post.

Re: U.S next step

Come on America do not be a hypocrite if you want to attack just come on and declare war let see than what happens we are waiting INSHALLAH

Re: U.S next step

gud point....hypocracy is trait of kufaars bro!!
and this is difrnce btw us ...we muslims say it straight..

Re: U.S next step

not really comparable and I did think about that before posting.

1) The Mumbai attack was a security breach on civilian locations. The OBL one was 800mtrs from your military academy in a town with I understand 3 regiments nearby?

2) The primary concern surrounding Pakistan's nuke and their ability to safe-keep it away from terrorists is the threat from numerous terrorist groups that are well established inside Pakistan, and highly suspected to have even infiltrated into military agencies.

It is a question of threat perception - hope you are not interpreting my earlier post as me saying Pakistan is incapable of safe keeping.

i will not hesitate for a second if a similar things happens in India, that Indian nukes shouls also be better protected. We know that whether it is a Pak nuke or Indian nuke that falls into the wrong hand, it doesn't matter which, both our countries will suffer unimaginably.

I am sorry to say, but for some reason I get the feeling you won't ever believe that I am not trying to provoke Pakistani posters here! what did I do to deserve such suspicion?

Re: U.S next step

Oh come on, wasn't IN embarrassed that a couple of dingies and that too from an enemy aka Pakistan could so easily wash up on indian shores? The IN leaves no chance behind to seize and torture innocent pakistani fishermen in indian prisons.
