One where molvies show flexibility on the issue, one where they dont. Just goes to show some diversity of thought.
Public beating for selling or buying roses on Valentines Day
“Islam condemns Valentine’s Day and boys presenting flowers to young girls is vulgar and goes against the norms of Islam,” said Maulvi Ibrahim, adding that clerics in the district had made announcements stating that anyone seen purchasing or selling red roses should be punished in public.
..
Police officer Bashir Awan said that no one would be allowed to celebrate Valentine’s Day in Jhawarian. “Strict action should be taken against people seen handing roses. They should be arrested,” said Haroon.
Several university students and religious party workers have warned that anyone seen purchasing ‘red’ merchandise pertaining to Valentine’s Day would be beaten up in public. “We will see who dares promote this vulgarity,” said university student Razaq.
..
Mufti Rehman, adding “This is a Jewish tradition, but we Muslims are celebrating it. The government should ban Valentine’s Day and we are drafting a petition in this regard.”

PAKISTANI students have brought Valentine’s cards and flowers to the detained self-confessed killer of one of the country’s most liberal politicians.
..
“Celebrating Valentine’s Day with Mumtaz Qadri,” read one placard.
They handed over flowers and cards to jail officials who said they would give them to Qadri, as students from religious schools shouted “Free Qadri!”.
..
“We admit it is not our tradition and it is wrong to celebrate Valentine’s Day, but it is now widely celebrated and the media is full with Valentine’s Day activities,” student Hussain Ahmed, 22, told AFP at the jail.
“We love Qadri because he loves the holy Prophet and that is why we have brought flowers and Valentine’s Day cards for him,” Ahmed said.
Qari Hanif Qureshi, a firebrand speaker and apparent inspiration for Qadri, also said Valentine’s Day was not Muslim.
“It is wrong to celebrate it, but since these students have come to express their love and support for Qadri, we cannot turn them away,” Qureshi told AFP.

Re: Two valentines days stories from Pakistan
Question is, would the beat up squad go after the crowd in the second case (the ones buying flowers for qadri)
p.s. who the hell is that police walla bashira declaring no one will be allowed to give out roses… I can understand how some renegade molvis feel about the topic, but this policya is a public servant and he’s making his own rules here. He should be suspended for making such a statement. It also mentions someone named Haroon. Who is he?
Re: Two valentines days stories from Pakistan

Someone named Mumtaz Haroon… missed a quote from him:
“Young boys and girls do not interact let alone hand each other presents in our culture and Valentine’s Day has become an excuse for such reprehensible behaviour,” said a district officer Mumtaz Haroon.
