Two US marines shot in Kuwait

Seems like the locals don’t want American boys in the country. But then who will protect the great democracy that is Kuwait

US marine killed in Kuwait shootout

The US has about 10,000 troops in Kuwait

American marines say they have come under attack during military exercises on Kuwait’s Failaka island.
The US regional command says a US soldier was killed in the shootout. The two gunmen were killed when US troops opened fire on their car.

** The information we have now is that they were civilians **

David Lapan, US Department of Defense
Another marine was wounded in the exchange.

“It is unknown who the gunmen are. The incident is under investigation,” said Lieutenant Josh Frey of the US Navy’s Fifth Fleet in Bahrain.

However, an unnamed Kuwaiti official quoted by Reuters news agency says the incident could have resulted from a misunderstanding of the US-imposed exclusion area around the exercises.

US troops began the annual exercises with Kuwait on 24 September.

The manoeuvres come as US forces prepare for possible military action against Iraq.

Civilians

US Department of Defense spokesman David Lapan said the marines were taking part in a live fire exercise at about 1130 (0830 GMT) when they came under attack.

It was unclear who the men were, Mr Lapan said.

“The information we have now is that they were civilians,” he said. “They appear not to be Kuwaiti military.”

He added: “Nobody is ready to say who these guys are.”

Failaka island had now been sealed off and the BBC’s Heba Saleh in Cairo says US investigators will be keen to see whether the attackers had any links with Osama Bin Laden’s al-Qaeda network.

Misunderstanding?

But the unnamed Kuwaiti official quoted by Reuters said he was not sure the marines had been fired upon first.

“It seems there could have been a misunderstanding on which areas were sealed off for the exercise and these people entered the restricted area which was followed by shooting. The two people in the car were killed,” the senior officer said.

“We are still investigating to find out what happened exactly and if indeed the vehicle fired first or not,” he added.

Kuwait is the strongest regional supporter of US plans to topple Iraqi leader Saddam Hussein - despite unanimous Arab League statements vigorously opposing unilateral military action.

There are already close to 10,000 fully equipped US troops in the country.

But US officials say the Eager Mace annual exercises - now in their fifth year - had been planned long ago and are not connected to possible US-led military action against Iraqi leader Saddam Hussein.

Sad.

But I have read that even the Kuwaiti government opposes a US attack on Iraq, without UN approval. That shows Kuwaiti's are moving towards moving on from the past, and working towards better relations with Iraq. Only the US is holding it back, hence you see this sort of of ant-American reaction.

I have read just the opposite. And Kuwaiti allowing military exercises at a time like this seem to indicate that they do support enforcement of Iraqi disarmament, through force if required. It's not about having better relations with Iraq; it's about forcing Saddam to give up his WMD.

But as usual you can’t back your statements up, while I can. Read on…

Kuwait has said it opposed any unilateral military action against Iraq. However, it has said it will allow U.S. forces to use its land for an attack if the war is sanctioned by the United Nations.

Even Kuwait has to say if the UN approves it.

Bush said you are either with us or them. Guess which side i am on. They are nothing but collateral damage. Kuwait is against the attack on Iraq, as is every muslim country. They will only fall in line when forced to do so.

It is a fact that the Kuwaiti Government hates Iraq Malik79... For instance... I travelled on Kuwaiti airlines a few months back, and they had a special catalogue in the seat for their airport, and it was a guide as to how the Iraqi forces looted and plundered the airport and then the Kuwaiti airlines after occupation had to undergo a major overhaul. Would they keep such things there if they were working towards better relations with the Iraqi Government? They will never forgive what the Iraqis did to them back then. The Kuwait people in general have a very strong opinion about Saddam, as most of them have relatives that got killed/abducted by his forces, but there is one thing, they do not generally hate the people of Iraq. Maybe their common religion binds them together in that respect.

"ONLY" 2 died? :)

ALLAH HUAKBAR!

Ironically the leaders met and "made up" so to speak. Plus if the kuwaitis hate iraq so much why arent they more vocal about the war. After all if they support the US better for them. 2 dead, big deal.

There was another attack today in Kuwait.
