two job offers...

so lets say…

you give interviews at two companies’

company A ------ the job will be just to pay the bills…

company B------- the job will be better in almost all aspects..

so…the situation is..

company A sends an offer letter…asks you to accept it…
the company B is still taking its time in sending the offer letter…but its expected that they will send the letter soon.

(THERE IS NO SURETY of getting offer from A or B at the moment)

now what should be done??

1)- Accept the offer from compnay A…and stick to it
2)-Accept the offer from company A…if company B sends offer…move to company B leaving the job A

3)…other

Re: two job offers…

 If even job #1 is not confirmed you might as well wait for the #2 one.

Re: two job offers...

2nd option sounds more feasible to me. Well it depends on one's circumstnaces too...

Re: two job offers…

if that were to happen…there woudn’t be any problem..

my question is specifically that…if A offers before B communicate their decision…then what to do…

Re: two job offers...

tough situation. If I were you and I dont have much choices I will go with A (according to you they may confirm offer before B)

But at the end of the day. Job is like Kismat. you should take chance and go with B .

Re: two job offers...

well i have been in a similar position a few months ago:

Some one contacted me through linkedin, got a couple of interviews and the I got the job offer. I accepted the offer and was serving the notice period, when I received a phone call for a job which I had applied for about two months before receiving the initial phone call for the job that I had accepted. The latter was an ideal/dream job which I couldnt forego, therefore I decided to take a chance, underwent interviews and before the notice period was up I almost made it to the end. The medical examination was holding me up, anyways took a chance and refused the first job and within a week got an offer letter from the latter.

Re: two job offers...

I would Accept the offer from company A........if company B sends offer......move to company B leaving the job A.

Re: two job offers...

its a balance between being a good professional and also pursuing what is important.
companies are known to rescind offers, lay people off soon after hiring them etc etc etc
and its just business, nothing personal...
typically, if i am in that dilemma, I would try to delay the decision and be very frank that its a big decision and you want to be sure..

Re: two job offers...

Hey NomiCa,
I would say go with Job A when you're not exactly sure if you'll even get job B for now. If you do hear back from job B, tell the specifics (benefit package) to your employer at Job A and see if they will match the offer. If not, then you have the right to move on to a better option :). No need to feel guilty about it. But for now, don't turn down a guaranteed job for one that you may or may not get.

Good luck!

Re: two job offers...

hmm........... thing is........ job A is not of my core area of expertise........its sorta of a different career path..... i will take job B anyday.......its not even about the benefit package......

anyways.......thanks a lot .... i will join A and then dump them if B offers :D

Re: two job offers...

Wow I have a similar ish dilemma - time to start a thread :(

Re: two job offers...

yes Nomi, there are two things in this ..

One, if its just a matter for a few days wait between the two offers , then its better to wait and manager company A's expectations and make the decision carefully.

Two. but if company B is taking its sweet time, then you got to be selfish and accept A .. and then when company B comes back to you , and you still feel they can add more value to your career , let company B know.. I know its selfish but at the end of the day every business is a selfish business , its never about its people , its only about its stakeholders and profits .. which means people have the right to think of their careers carefully too ..

Good luck .. though I would call up company B and let them know that you have other offers at hand and you do want to be able to make a selection hence if they can do something to speed up the offer process will be much appreciated ... this will give you an idea of whats going on at their end and also they would know that they got to act fast with you ...

Re: two job offers...

I would personally advise against accepting job offer A right away. I'd stall the acceptance for as long as possible and in the meanwhile contact company B for an update/ETA on their decision and provide an indication that you have another offer. Don't burn your bridges with company A by accepting then ditching them - you never know when you or someone else you know might cross paths with this company again.

Re: two job offers...

hmm.......actually i do plan to stall......i have already given told them during interview that my availability will be later due to some work i have.......and that i can't show up right away........
but they might want me to sign a contract/accept the offer in writing right-away..........but show up later......

any ideas on how to stall acceptance of offer??

Re: two job offers...

Nomi, was there a stated deadline for acceptance in the offer letter? - if so, then you need to respond to the letter in writing to ask for an extension. You will need to have a firm date in mind for being able to make your decision by then.

I recall reading some sample job offer extension letters on BrightHub - you can look these up if you need ideas. Just remember that you need to be tactful and express your gratitude for the job while asking for more time to make an informed decision which will be beneficial for both you as well as the employer.

Re: two job offers...

You two are very nice folks , but it is dog eats dog world out there being very nice does not pay many a times. You have to act as a heartless corporation behaves they make decisions based on their business needs and would not blink twice when they need to lay off someone.
Similarly and individual has the right to say goodby when there is a need to do so.
As you two know they say in USA employment is at will . The employer has the right to let anybody go anytime without specifying a reason and an employee also has the same right.
Now for Nomi since job A is out of your league and you will not go back to company A begging for your job back if things do not turn out right a Company B , there is no harm in accepting this offer and wait for company B and then dump them as appropriate.

Re: two job offers...

That's a huge assumption Mirch bhai... what if in a couple of years time, there's a fabulous opportunity (at a higher career level) that Nomi wants to avail at company A... what if down the road, his sibling or cousin want him to be a reference for a job at company A etc.

Again, these are mere hypotheticals but I'd rather err on the side of caution. You just never know.

In any case, my advice to Nomi is to stall the acceptance, but if he can't do it, then accept the offer at company A and if the offer at B pans out, try to renegotiate with company A / justify his exit and take-up the better opportunity at that point. So, overall, I am in fact advising him to consider his own interests... just tactfully that's all.

Re: two job offers...

My two depreciated cents:

If you work in a small industry where reputation matters, accepting and then ditching employment in a short span of time is not done - your reputation precedes you and people in the industry talk to each other.

The better option is to delay acceptance of Employer A's offer and get in touch with Employer B to see if they plan on offering you the position - if you've interviewed with Employer B, then you've a right to expect a response from them in a timely manner.

Re: two job offers...

I think the first step is to contact Company B, say you have another offer but you really like company B and ask where they are in the process. They will say something like "go ahead and take it", which means that you're not in the running, "when do you have to tell them by" which means you have a chance etc.
