Two founder members of biggest Muslim charity in the US jailed for 65 years

It is sad to see Muslim charities getting involved in illegal stuff.

The lesson for everyone! Do not give money to any religious charity (period).

Hamas backers jailed in Texas
Two founder members of what was once the biggest Muslim charity in the US have each been jailed for 65 years.

Shukri Abu Baker, 50, and Ghassan Elashi, 55, were convicted of channelling funds to the Palestinian militant group, Hamas.

Three other members of the Holy Land Foundation were jailed for between 15 and 20 years by a Dallas court.

The charity was found guilty last year of sending $12m (£7.4m) to fund social programmes controlled by Hamas.

The five men were convicted in November on charges ranging from money laundering to supporting terrorism.

Hamas was designated a terrorist organisation by the US government 14 years ago, making it illegal to give the group money or other support.

“ I did it because I cared, not at the behest of Hamas ”
Defendant Shukri Abu Baker
The defendants said they were only interested in helping the needy.

Their supporters said no money had been used to fund violence, and the case was a by-product of what it called the anti-Islamic sentiment following the 11 September attacks of 2001.

Shukri Abu Baker told the judge in Dallas on Wednesday: “I did it because I cared, not at the behest of Hamas.”

But prosecutors argued that the humanitarian aid sent by the charity allowed Hamas to divert money to militant activities.

Orphans

Jurors had reached their guilty verdict last year after eight days of deliberations following a retrial of the Texas-based Holy Land Foundation for Relief and Development.

It was the largest terrorism financing trial since the 9/11 attacks.

The indictment against the group said it sponsored Palestinian orphans and families in the West Bank and Gaza whose relatives had died or been imprisoned as a result of Hamas attacks on Israel.

The charity was shut down and had its assets frozen in 2001.

Re: Two founder members of biggest Muslim charity in the US jailed for 65 years

yes dont get involve in charity when its affliated with muslim but no worries if its for zionist regime . us policies are disgustingly hypocritical.

Re: Two founder members of biggest Muslim charity in the US jailed for 65 years

^absolutely.

So just because the founders of the biggest muslim charity in the world's strongest nation happen to think Hamas is right against Isreal, they're deemed unfit for free society and must be locked up? What next? anyone questioning the findings of WMDs in Iraq to get capital punishment for denying holocaust? tsk tsk...

it's even worse when people actually come out and justify such hypocrism and double-standards with a straight face as if they really believe it!

Re: Two founder members of biggest Muslim charity in the US jailed for 65 years

^^ deal with it

America supports Israel

why the hell should America support the Palestinians?

what have the Muslim brothers and Palestinians ever done for America?

they are the sworn enemies of every single american men, woman and child

Re: Two founder members of biggest Muslim charity in the US jailed for 65 years

^^ And as muslims we shall support our muslim brothers.....even if they be the "sworn enemies of every single american" and the allies of americans.

You deal with this...

news flash m2k, we are muslims we dont take lessons from americans or politicians.develop scruples.

This should win one of the most ridiculous posts of the year.

yeah...tell that to hamas, hezbollah, Iran and their supporters when they do their ritual death to america chants

good....so don't expect america to tow your line........

Re: Two founder members of biggest Muslim charity in the US jailed for 65 years

I think it was all because Hamas is recognised as a terrorist outfit by US and so helping it counts as helping a terrorist outfit.

And you expect the American Government to honour charities that support these guys...

Yeah, that is true. That's also the point of argument in the Middle East because Hamas won the elections and should have been accepted as a democratically elected Party. But that's another debate.

As for topic, at-hand, you are correct for the reason they've been jailed.

US Justice System is 10000 times better & fair then any of our so-called Muslim Country. I fully believe the trial was fair and they are guilty as charge.

As far as US policies concerned,.. golden words for everyone:

Beggar's are not choosers !

Bahi Sahab, They are living and running the charity in USA not in Egypt, they have to follow the law of the land. According to the law, Hamas is terrorist organization. If they don't like, pack up and move to some friendly Hamas country, .. hmmm..

Iran & Syria come to mind ..

Re: Two founder members of biggest Muslim charity in the US jailed for 65 years

read my other reply. i said according to US Laws, the decision is correct. Morally, it is not. Internationally it is not.

Re: Two founder members of biggest Muslim charity in the US jailed for 65 years

^ Internationally?

So when west dictate Muslim Countries to adopt Secularism & Democraiztion, then they are doing right ? I mean according to their moral values & international standing they have every right to do it.

Re: Two founder members of biggest Muslim charity in the US jailed for 65 years

No, that's why you have some nations that are always a target either via official statements or media because they refuse to adopt the "American democratic model".

I'm inline with you on what you said earlier that Charity Founders were jailed according to U.S. Laws, yes that's fine. I agree.

What i said way earlier and what the others said is on the moral grounds, the decision is wrong. Just because they disagree with Israeli/American stance on the legitimacy of Hamas, should not make them terrorist funders/supporters because Hamas won the elections democratically. And Israel's refusal to accept the outcome shows double-standards, and U.S. ofcourse towed Isreali stance. But might is right; and unfortunately there isn't an argument to that sort of arrogance by one of a few powerful nations towards those who are weak.

Do you now see what i'm saying? So, morally the decision to jail them on the basis of their belief is wrong, and i don't think they would have been convicted in an impartial international court either because some nations sympathize with Hamas like you said, so that makes it an international split on the decision, and the decision would not be unanimous to what America thinks.

oh i dont, they only come to us when its in their interest ,contrary to the popular belief i donot think their interference is for the good of pakistan.

It is against the USA constitution for US Govt to aid or support the propagation of any religion....or any country soley created for one religion.
We go against our Laws when we aid Israel or Pakistan!

sighz we are discussing us foreign policy here wine. much as you love the coutnry you have to be a complete towhead to believe that US policies are fair and square when it comes to their foreign affairs. US doesnot develop a political stance for the scruples, it does it to save its imperial interests. The US justice system is not under scrutiny its the policy regarding hamas and zionist regime. grow up , you are like a two years old.

as for the golden words, try to think again. you dont get aid or money because you beg, you get it because they have their interest invested in your country. The main thing is to play the politics and secure your interests while keep them hanging for more. Tomorrow if they donot have any interest in your country ,you might beg like a baywa but you wont get a dime. Lastly you might take their money to survie but if your survival is all about begging then it will be very short lived.
