and tlk, if you and niksik dont agree on how ur moon was sighted, why didnt you say anything? or change your masjid?
There is no need for us to change as our masjid did go with the local moon sighting, not global. The issue with our masjid happened when commitee started forcing our Imam that Chile should be considered local for us. Then another issue was that day was clear in Chile but only one witness was received. Imam was not ready to accept only one shahadat (as ruling is that on a clear day, there should be more than one shahadat), but again our mashallah committee forced him.
I (along with few other people) had a personal talk with Shiekh and we told him that we trust him and will go with his decsion. When he made the announcement of eid, we all (reluctantly) went with his decsion.
question to the "local" moon sighting stance: how local is it? just the city limits? across country? whole contininent?? if its the whole continent, then why not spread it over the ocean as well?

Good question. I am not sure about the answer but I heard that some people stick with "country" no matter how large the country is, and then some people go with whole hemisphere. That is why some people thought that Chile can be considered local as its part of western hemisphere.
If you leave it to me (and as you said that I am no shiekh), I think local should be considered 48 miles radius as that is what we consider local for Namaz.
I'd think for USA, moon sighted anywhere in US/Canada should be valid. I guess South America would be valid too then. But not continents. I wonder what the ruling is.
and off topic - why doesn't Islam have anyone that's in charge? like a Global Calipha or something? Have one for all 4 schools of thought. Sort of like a pope.

do you look at the sun movement when deciding the prayer timings??
or do you follow that calculated schedule thingy??
Good question. but that calculated thingy is local. We dont follow the printed calendar of Makkah for our local pryaers, do we? ANd even then, if I dont have local calendar or watch, I can use a stick and using the shadow of that stick and/or light at hroizon during sunset and sunrise and calculate the prayers time.
^yea..i meant the scheduled thingy calculation as per your local area......local met departement or something........
I hear the scientists can pretty easily tell u whether there is going to be a moon or not..........so why don't just follow what the science of your local area (not saudi schedule) says??
wouldn't that like.....eliminate all doubts?? about reliability of witnesses.......and also blilnd adherence to the saudi calendar????

Because of this
what if you are stranded in a remote island by yourself for 2-3 years. No cell phone, no internet, no TV. How would you do do eid? Would you follow 1, 2 or 3?
Mo'ttaa imam malik says that no Sahabi of Madina ever kept those 6 fasts. Yes we all know of that famoue hadees, but if no sahabi ever kept those rozas, then maybe Prophet revoked that hadees in his life.
