Golf is a rich man's game and very popular in States, that's why? Golf is much more popular and has much wider appeal than circket. Cricket will have to get rid of test cricket to widen its appeal beyond commonwealth countries and become a truly popular sport in the world.
as ehsan bhai said, Golf per is leeye companies invest kertee hein keyun k most of the top management professionals play gold (at least in US) ... in fact may business meetings are held at Golf clubs .... deals are finalized while playing golf ..
I played golf as well with company execs. But unfortunately, I never bothered with it again. I even took classes back then, got my kit of clubs, etc. But when I played, I hated it. Stupid 18 holes take a whole day and at the end all you have is a little tally card showing whose ahead. I mean any reasonably sane person can putt, so its just who did it in the least strokes.
It is a game of the rich and famous. Cricket is for everyone.
Coming back to the point of Test cricket.
I think Test cricket has a life and it will mutate a bit though. There will be changes made to make it more interesting. ICC is already planning those.
The US and other (china) will be big on cricket and it will become more international. Unlike baseball, which has a world league only played in the americas. Cricket is already an international sport.
So shorter versions of cricket will probably take off first, but as soon as people will see the longer version in those new markets, they will definitely want it as well.
However, it seems 5 day tests may not exist in another 10 years. Lets see.

We also need to realize that the spike in T20 cricket also coincided with the lack of international Test cricket due to the security situation in Pakistan. So while other countries were still playing test cricket, Pakistan had a huge gap of almost a year and a half or may be more, and yes, during this time, our team was playing more T20 matches. So obviously, the team got into a T20 mindset in general.
So I wouldn't say that T20 is the "cause" of our failure in the test arena, its just that we've played more of it lately due to lack of opportunities for test cricket. Had our team played a couple of more test series in the last two years, we would've been faring better.
