njgal.. it actually depends on the school they go to.. my nephews are in city school and they are strictly forbidden to go for tutoring.. I believe their teachers are not allowed to tutor outside school.

One of my co workers daughter goes to Kumon and apparently it has helped her a lot in school.. I dont know first hand about tutoring in the US..in Pakistan, though, I went for tutoring after my 10th grade.. they start early for first/secon year of college in summer so I was a lil bit ahead when the college started.. It helped me a lot but that was it.. no tutoring during school year!

My niece has done Kumon for two years. I think it has its benefits.

My parents actually tutored my sisters and I…it helped a lot.
