DO you feel like kids benefit for extra tutoring outside the school? Private programs that are after school or on weekends. In U.S, there are programs like Kumon.
In Pakistan, seems like every child is getting extra tutoring after school. (they call it tuition).
njgal.. it actually depends on the school they go to.. my nephews are in city school and they are strictly forbidden to go for tutoring.. I believe their teachers are not allowed to tutor outside school.
One of my co workers daughter goes to Kumon and apparently it has helped her a lot in school.. I dont know first hand about tutoring in the US..in Pakistan, though, I went for tutoring after my 10th grade.. they start early for first/secon year of college in summer so I was a lil bit ahead when the college started.. It helped me a lot but that was it.. no tutoring during school year!
The quality of the school and teaching staff - some schools’ academic programs are behind what they should be - some teachers don’t teach and they just present a lesson and expect the parents to explain it to the child. Extra learning is almost a necessity to esnure your child can keep up.
Is your child an independent learner and doesn’t need any extra help?
Do you as a parent have the time and the patience to provide your child with the extra help they need (one of my sisters doesn’t have the patience, so she did hire a tutor).
If your child is an independent learner and the school’s curriculum is satisfactory in your opinion, then tutoring for the sake of tutoring isn’t necessary. Tutoring is an extra to help a child keep up. Getting ahead is great, but not necessary.
Kumon curriculum has a lot of memorization of tables, math facts etc. Seems to me it’s more of extra practice rather than tutoring per say. Children seem to get quicker with math and reading.
depends on the needs. i never had any tutoring and still got a top position in FSc board exam (gold meda)
But my daughter struggles with Math. have a tutor come in once in a while to help push.
i guess the difference is the educational environment and the support structure. in my days, we were all about studies and every one around, including teachers took pride in making sure we do better. now a days, i think, education has become commercial. vast majority of teachers go to school to earn a living. not their fault. vast majority of us treat them like “employees of the school” rather than teachers. so, tit for tat. and in this toxic environment, a little extra push for the students might actually go a long way. my 2 paisay.
