Tussle cropping up over Waqar, Zaheer’s retention

KARACHI: A tussle has started in the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) over the retention of Waqar Younis as the bowling coach and Zaheer Abbas as the manager with the national team for the two One-day Internationals (ODIs) in Abu Dhab on April 18 and 19.
‘The News’ has learnt that with less than a week to go before the team departs for Abu Dhabi some tussle has started in the Board over whether Waqar should accompany the team again as bowling coach and if Zaheer should be retained as the manager.
“Even when these two (Waqar and Zaheer) were first appointed there were some senior officials in the Board who opposed them strongly. One of them opposing the appointment of Zaheer as the manager before the Sri Lanka tour had described him as a weak administrator,” a source disclosed.
He also revealed that even in Waqar’s case there was campaign that the former Test bowler didn’t need to accompany the team and he should be simply posted at the National Cricket Academy (NCA) and work from there.
“But in both cases the PCB Chairman Shaharyar Khan had the final word with support from another senior official Abbas Zaidi who backed the need to send Waqar with the team and have Zaheer as the manager,” the source stated.
“Now with the Abu Dhabi games coming up again uncertainty prevails whether Waqar would be allowed to accompany the team but once again those backing him are trying to ensure he goes with the team as does Zaheer,” he added.
There are differing views on how useful Waqar and Zaheer were to the team in Sri Lanka where Pakistan ended up winning the One-day International (ODI) and Test series. The source said the real problem would arise when the team goes to in late June because two senior officials of the Board are keen to have their own candidates as manager for the important series
“While one is backing Zaheer to continue for the England tour the other believes that former Test player Talat Ali is the right person for the job as he is firm and authoritative,” the source said.
Talat’s name incidentally has also been sent to the ICC by the PCB for another term as match referee but sources say that this time the Indian lobby is working overtime and most probably former Indian batsman Duleep Vengsarkar will get his choice posting as the ICC has to choose only one candidate from among eight nominations.
