Tussle ove Waqar & Zaheer

Tussle cropping up over Waqar, Zaheer’s retention
By our correspondent

KARACHI: A tussle has started in the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) over the retention of Waqar Younis as the bowling coach and Zaheer Abbas as the manager with the national team for the two One-day Internationals (ODIs) in Abu Dhab on April 18 and 19.

‘The News’ has learnt that with less than a week to go before the team departs for Abu Dhabi some tussle has started in the Board over whether Waqar should accompany the team again as bowling coach and if Zaheer should be retained as the manager.

“Even when these two (Waqar and Zaheer) were first appointed there were some senior officials in the Board who opposed them strongly. One of them opposing the appointment of Zaheer as the manager before the Sri Lanka tour had described him as a weak administrator,” a source disclosed.

He also revealed that even in Waqar’s case there was campaign that the former Test bowler didn’t need to accompany the team and he should be simply posted at the National Cricket Academy (NCA) and work from there.

“But in both cases the PCB Chairman Shaharyar Khan had the final word with support from another senior official Abbas Zaidi who backed the need to send Waqar with the team and have Zaheer as the manager,” the source stated.

“Now with the Abu Dhabi games coming up again uncertainty prevails whether Waqar would be allowed to accompany the team but once again those backing him are trying to ensure he goes with the team as does Zaheer,” he added.

There are differing views on how useful Waqar and Zaheer were to the team in Sri Lanka where Pakistan ended up winning the One-day International (ODI) and Test series. The source said the real problem would arise when the team goes to in late June because two senior officials of the Board are keen to have their own candidates as manager for the important series

“While one is backing Zaheer to continue for the England tour the other believes that former Test player Talat Ali is the right person for the job as he is firm and authoritative,” the source said.

Talat’s name incidentally has also been sent to the ICC by the PCB for another term as match referee but sources say that this time the Indian lobby is working overtime and most probably former Indian batsman Duleep Vengsarkar will get his choice posting as the ICC has to choose only one candidate from among eight nominations.

Re: Tussle ove Waqar & Zaheer

This is a very obnoxious and revolting matter and a statement, to say the least. Here we are, having acquired a prominent victory in the both sides of the cricket in Sri Lanka in almost over a decade worth's of cricket, with the main focus of the winning combination being the bowling aspect which, clearly, showed the fruits whose seeds were planted by the legendary Waqar himself, and the dwindling number of extras that were handed to the opposition on the silver platter, such circumstances are, once again, overlooked, slapped in the face and were thrown straight down into the depths of trash, and instead, our almighty board is looking to hire more chamchaas instead of someone with a highly-regarded authority and an upright designation. To tell you the truth, when this source leaked out a couple of weeks ago that Waqar and Zaheer are starting out in their respective positions, I, for one, was extremely glad, considering the great amount of potential that the former can unearth from his own set of bare hands. By not sending Waqar and Zaheer with the team on their foreign tours, and instead, forcing him to safeguard the NCA subject is simply ridiculous and worthless. You don't even think of making that kind of a colossal blunder for a split second.

Good grief, we simply cannot afford to live outside the boundaries of chamcha-geeri. It is always bound to come up, in one disguisting way or another. Utter garbage.

Re: Tussle ove Waqar & Zaheer

I think this is stupid and has alot to do with the chairman of the board, why he is not strong enough to appoint officials for long term.

Both Waqar and Zaheer should accompany the team.

Re: Tussle ove Waqar & Zaheer

The whole "news" report in the first post appears very fishy. Its chokeful of unnamed sources and speculations. Even the writer of the news story is unnamed, as if no one wants to take ownership of this story and no statement there can be held up as a fact. No facts means you can't really dispute anything. Its just pulling news out of thin air. Not to mention that Jang/The News don't exactly enjoy a stellar reputation of not making up sensational news stories.

Re: Tussle ove Waqar & Zaheer

^ Oh its another gem by Waheed khan. Dont you dare disrespect his 'sources'. He completed his Phd in yellow journalism.

An update regarding this “issue” -

Inzamam convinces PCB chief for retaining Waqar in Abu Dhabi ODIs

By our correspondent

KARACHI: Pakistan cricket team’s captain Inzamam-ul-Haq has had to intervene and convince the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) to allow former Test captain Waqar Younis to continue as the bowling coach with the national team for the two One-day Internationals (ODIs) in Abu Dhabi this month.

‘The News’ has confirmed that like before the tour to Sri Lanka, once again the Director Cricket Operations PCB, Saleem Altaf was not in favour of attaching Waqar with the national team and instead had asked him to concentrate on working at the National Cricket Academy (NCA).

Altaf’s argument after Waqar’s appointment as the bowling coach has been that he has basically been appointed to work with the bowlers at the NCA, which resumes functioning from next month and that there is no need to have him (Waqar) travelling with the national team on the foreign tours.

But even before the Sri Lanka tour, Inzamam had to specially request the Board, particularly Chairman Shaharyar Khan, to get permission for allowing Waqar to travel with the team.

This time also, it seems, the same episode has been enacted with Altaf first refusing to allow Waqar to travel with the team to Abu Dhabi and then Inzamam making a plea with the chairman.

Pakistan will play India in two ODIs in the UAE on April 18 and 19.

“Inzamam told the chairman and other PCB officials that he felt Waqar should be allowed to continue with the team, at least till the NCA does not start functioning again. He argued that Waqar had worked tirelessly with the bowlers in Sri Lanka and produced some results and his presence had a good effect on the team so he should be allowed to continue for the Abu Dhabi tour also,” a well-informed source said.

Waqar might also return to Abu Dhabi to work with the Pakistan A team that goes to the same place for a six-nation tournament called the Euro-Asia Cup.

Waqar is being paid a reported contract fee of $100,000 for his tenure that lasts till the next World Cup in 2007. He had flown to Sri Lanka with the team after a verbal agreement with the Board and without signing a contract formally.

However, the PCB has decided against sending Zaheer Abbas as the manager to Abu Dhabi, a job he fulfilled in Sri Lanka with considerable success. “Again it was a case of the Board officials differing on the performance and usefulness of having Zaheer continue as the manager after the Sri Lanka tour,” the source stated.

He said however the Board had decided to send Zaheer as a special guest for the two games in Abu Dhabi.

Interestingly, the PCB, on Wednesday, also confirmed that Saleem Altaf would be accompanying the team to Abu Dhabi as chef de mission because of his long association with the Abu Dhabi Cricket Council (ADCC) for whom he worked as the general manager for quite sometime.

Altaf is said to be the man who persuaded Shaharyar to meet the ADCC officials and also convinced him that Pakistan should play India in the two one-dayers to launch the Sheikh Zayed Stadium as an international venue.

Re: Tussle ove Waqar & Zaheer

I think this tussle of Waqar & Zaheer should be kept aside for the good sake of Pak Cricket team. All these news are popping up after a successful tour of SL. I don't know what effect Zaheer had on the team but Waqar affected definitely in sense of "better" bowling and "artillery" of M. Asif..

Can PCB just shut the mouth of the chamcha lobby in the cricket board and do what's best for the interest of Pak team? I'm sure, it's doable and if it means for Shaharyar Khan to take drastic measures, I'll support it fully.
