Turkey offers $150m relief

Turkey has announced a relief package of $150 million for the quake-hit people of Pakistan. The package was announced by Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan while addressing a joint press conference with Prime Minister Shaukat Aziz after their talks here Wednesday. The relief package will include financial assistance of $100 million and relief goods worth $50 million, including one million blankets, 50,000 tonnes of flour and 25,000 tonnes of sugar. Mr Erdogan said tents would be produced in Turkey and sent immediately to Pakistan in view of the fast approaching winter in the affected areas. He said his country would establish in the quake-hit areas day-care hospitals and elementary schools to help meet educational requirements of the displaced children. He said Turkey would also render assistance in the long term phase of reconstruction and rehabilitation and added he had brought with him construction and housing experts. He said he with Mr Aziz and Turkish experts would inspect some damaged sites on Friday and discuss the projects in which Turkey could help Pakistan.

Turkish premier said his country had experience in building quake-proof buildings and it would like to share the experience with Pakistan. Turkey would provide technical assistance in several other fields, he added. He said Turkish people were raising funds for contributing to the relief efforts. “Every (Turkish) student has made contribution to the relief fund. Mosques have launched a fund raising campaign and business community was involved in the effort.” Prime Minister Aziz thanked Turkey for its valuable assistance in meeting the challenge and lauded Mr Erdogan for his commitment to assist during the reconstruction and rehabilitation process. He said Pakistan would benefit from Turkish experience in rebuilding of roads and other infrastructure and fast track house construction. He appreciated that the Turkish prime minister was visiting Pakistan when it was facing one of the worst tragedies caused by earthquakes. “Almost 50,000 people have been killed and the number is expected to increase. Many more people have been injured and rendered homeless.” He said the traumatic experience had caused anguish across the world and the reaction in Turkey had been the most broad-based and widespread.

*Speaking at an iftar organised by the Turkish business community for the earthquake victims in Pakistan, Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan noted, “Pakistan has held a very special place for us since the days of the Dardanelles Wars (World War I). They did not abandon us and we cannot leave them in such times as these either.” *

Unbelievable outpouring of solidarity with Pakistan from our Turkish brothers. :k:

Turkish students donate US $ 10 million, manifesting indelible bonds of relationship with Pakistan

Joining a wave of solidarity and support for Pakistan that has swept across Turkey in the wake of catastrophic earthquake, the Turkish students have raised US $ 10 million as relief assistance for the quake victims. The campaign of the Turkish students is not over yet and is likely to add substantially to the amount in a manifestation of indelible bonds of close relationship between the two countries. Turkish Education Minister Hussain Chelik informed his Pakistani counterpart Javed Ashraf Qazi that this gesture of the university, college and school students signifies Turkey’s sharing of sufferings of the quake victims and carrying over of warm relationship to next generations of the two countries. Chelik’s Ministry had moved immediately after the October 8 earthquake - the worst natural disaster in Pakistan’s history - and wrote letters to parents of the students for immediate collection of donations. **The letters reminded the parents that Turkey is eternally indebted to Pakistan for its invaluable support to them during the war of independence. “It’s time we express our feelings of love and affection for Pakistan,” the letter adds, motivating students and evoking an overwhelming response from the cross-section of Turkish society. **

The Muslims of the sub-continent fully supported Turkey’s territorial integrity and sovereignty during the first half of the last century. Later, Pakistan after its inception in 1947 has stood by Turkey at all international forums in times of trial and tribulation. Pakistan’s ambassador to Ankara, Syed Iftikhar Hussain Shah revealed the outpouring of sympathy by the Turkish people since October 8’s deadly quake, which has claimed more than 50,000 lives in NWFP and AJK and left a trail of destruction. “I have never witnessed anything like that in my life each Turkish heart is grieved and pulsating with support for Pakistan,” he told APP as Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan assured his country’s fullest support in a meeting with President Pervez Musharraf at the Aiwan-e-Sadr. A man in Turkey rang up at the Pakistan Embassy and said he felt deeply ashamed for not being able to donate enough money for the quake-affected people of Pakistan but would like to offer all blood running in his veins for recovery of the injured . Men and women contacted the Pakistan embassy in large numbers and said they were ready to sell all their belongings including ornaments as a humble contribution to relief efforts in the hour of trial. A school student begged his teacher to lend some money to him for donating to relief assistance, saying he would return it soon as his mother gets salary by the weekend. Turkey, which itself has withstood many earthquakes in its areas located close to fault lines, has come out with US dollars 150 million assistance for Pakistan - by far the largest by any country Ankara had promptly dispatched a team of doctors and medicines to the quake-affected areas following October 8’s 7.6-magnitude earthquake. Prime Minister Erdogan was the first foreign leader to visit Pakistan in the wake of the tragedy. He visited the quake-wrecked areas with Prime Minister Shaukat Aziz, offering all possible help in the hour of difficulty. Turkey will also send a team of experts to help assess ways to raise quake-proof infrastructure in the wrecked region. This step is being viewed as a great help for Pakistan, which has to mount daunting reconstruction and rehabilitation efforts in the mountainous areas sprawling over more than 20,000 sq km.

**Turkey plans to build housing in quake-hit Pakistan **

Turkey plans to build some 3,000 houses along with schools, hospitals and orphanages in Pakistan in long-term help to the quake-ravaged country, Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan said. “Pakistan is facing a grave disaster,” Erdogan was quoted by the Anatolia news agency as saying here late Saturday. “We have to quickly take steps to help them.” “We are planning to build hospitals, schools and orphanages in Pakistan. We also want to construct houses for widows,” Erdogan said, putting the number of planned houses at some 3,000. More than three million people were left homeless after the 7.6-magnitude earthquake struck Pakistani-controlled Kashmir on October 8, killing more than 53,000 people. In a visit to the Himalayan region earlier this week, Erdogan promised 150 million dollars in aid for quake victims, the largest donation by a single country. Turkey was one of the first countries to respond to the disaster, sending search and rescue teams, doctors, food and other relief goods to Pakistan. Turkey itself is no stranger to earthquakes. Some 20,000 people were killed when two massive earthquakes struck the country’s heavily industrialized northwest in August and November 1999.
