Turkish Lawmakers Set to Vote on Headscarf Ban

I really liked their secular type of government. I thought it was great that they completely seperated religion from state. But now I think they’re taking it too far to obstruct the rights of others. And I just hope the bill doesn’t get passed. =\

Turkey’s parliament is expected to vote Wednesday on a constitutional amendment to lift a decades-old ban on women wearing Islamic head scarves at Turkey’s universities.

Lawmakers will hold a final vote on the measure on Saturday.

Turkey’s ruling Justice and Development Party and the right-wing Nationalist Movement Party submitted a proposal to the legislature last week to lift the ban.

The two parties hold enough votes to easily approve the measure. But some lawmakers are likely to challenge the proposal, which they say violates Turkey’s secular traditions.

On Saturday, tens of thousands of secular Turks rallied against the government plan to lift the headscarf ban.

Turkey’s President Abdullah Gul backs the measure. He says universities should be open to all beliefs and views.

The proposed amendment would allow female students to wear head scarves as long as they are tied under the chin, leaving the face more exposed. The change would not apply to university teachers or civil service workers.

Burqas, which cover the whole body, would remain prohibited.

Turkey banned head scarves in public places, schools and universities in the 1980s.

Turkish Foreign Minister Ali Babacan says Turkey must lift the ban as part of democratic reforms it needs to gain membership in the European Union.

Your comments are contradictory. Did you mean to say, you hope the bill gets passed? How is prohibiting someone from wearing whatever they feel like consistent with secular government principles?

the turks are in effect admitting that they were wrong ever to ban it. and they were wrong, very wrong. not only are they overuling islamic dress code but they were telling the world that islam is perhaps outdated and unwelcoming. a confused nation

I think having a secular government is a good idea but not to the extent that it takes away basic rights of individuals. The government itself should be secular but it shouldn't force the people to be secular.

having a secular government is a sh't Idea...it only leads to hypocracy...we should follow the god given rules...quran meyn insaan ke liye rules likke hain, ammal karte uspe to kitni achi zindagi honi ti sab ki lekin people have something better to do than following the greatest book on earth...

so, "To lift" can be misinterpreted as "to put"? I did not know that. I am sorry. We do not disagree to "sue" someone here. Discussion needs to be on difference of opinion and not about agreement all the time. No need to get so worked up.
