Turkey should join Arab bloc: Cardinal

PARIS, Aug 11: Turkey should seek its future in an association of Muslim nations rather than try to join a European community with Christian roots, the Vatican’s top theologian said in an interview distributed on Wednesday.

Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger, doctrinal head of the Roman Catholic Church, said Turkey had always been “in permanent contrast to Europe” and linking it to Europe would be a mistake.

He also told France’s Le Figaro Magazine that the European Union should continue to debate the issue of its Christian heritage, a discussion that appeared to be closed in June when the EU adopted a constitution that avoided any mention of Christianity.

A secular state with a majority Muslim population, Turkey has been introducing political reforms to bolster its bid to open entry negotiations with the EU, which is due to decide in December whether to launch accession talks.

“In the course of history, Turkey has always represented a different continent, in permanent contrast to Europe,” Cardinal Ratzinger told the weekly magazine, noting that the Ottoman Empire once threatened Vienna and fought wars in the Balkans.

“Making the two continents identical would be a mistake,” he said. “It would mean a loss of richness, the disappearance of the cultural to the benefit of economics.” The German-born cardinal said Turkey “could try to set up a cultural continent with neighbouring Arab countries and become the leading figure of a culture with its own identity”.

Cardinal Ratzinger, who heads the Vatican’s Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith, said this would not exclude cooperation between such an Islamic community and the European Union. Both could work together to fight fundamentalism, he added.

The cardinal said the Vatican supported the separation of church and state but thought the EU was wrong to ignore what he said was the historical fact that its heritage was Christian.

“We should continue the debate on this question because I fear that behind this opposition (to mentioning Christianity in the European constitution) hides a hatred Europe has against itself and its great history,” he said.

Asked about the force of secularism in France, which has recently banned headscarves in state schools, Ratzinger said “aggressive secularism” would provoke more “Islamic fundamentalism” rather than counter it.

“There is a rejection of a world that refuses to recognize God or respect the sacred,” he said. “This loss of the sense of the sacred and respect for others provokes a reaction of self-defence in the Arab and Islamic world.” -Reuters

Re: phoenixdesi

Hi!!!

Turkey hates Arabs; do you have an idea how much.? Instead of joining them. if some one gives them chance, they would occupy whole arab. They would happily join non arab muslims, if such a block is made. But asian muslim do not want it that way. They want asian block but not on religion as criteria, they want economy as criteria.

Come on, Islam is a religion. Every individual has some religion and every on would be individually answerable to GOD on the day of judgement.

Why can not in one country people of different religion and cast can live together and observe their personal way of life(Religion). Why shall one try to gether same kind of people regarding religion in one country, and then call them selves as theological state. As such no one is answerable to GOD for others deeds. Am I wrong or right? Bye Sokoon

This guy is an idiot. He demonizes some virtues of islam as foreign to the judeo-christian values of europe yet cannot bring himself to laud many things like charity that is very much in common with the judeo chritian principles.

Yes Turks hate Arabs...They call them barbarians...& Arabs only come as jokes in their conversations...

^ Hmm…it seems we all have a lot in common with the Turks. :k:

give me a break matsui…no one not hate arabs…i just hope u were not serious…

SO a broad sweeping generalization that “turks” hate arabs is ok but to suggest that others hate and make fun of them is not? Vah!!

this not correct, turkey very much islamic country and they respect and give warm welcome to muslims from anywhere. If you go there islamic culture and atmosphere very much everywhere you go despite the extreme secular government and army in place.

The only problem you will have is with nationalists and is same with any nationalists around the world they have much hatred and these are the poeple you should avoid at all costs.

^ Well i have worked & Studied with many Turks & Turk students...None of them discusses Arabs in high esteem.....I don't know about Turks living in villages or interiors of Turkey though....So a broad generalization was a mistake on my part...i admit...

Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger say kaho keh he should sit and do his theology, padri panay ki zaroorat naheen hai. Apnay kaam say kaam rakho, aaj he is against muslim majority turkey, kall protestants ko EU say nikal day ga ahmaq ka baccha, aur parson orthodox chritians ko laat maray ga.

Vatican should pay more attention on its priests sticking their thingies in little boys in churches, rather than sticking its nose in politics. religion and politics dont mix well.
