Hubby and i are going to travel for about 5-6 weeks before we settle in NYC…we’re doing research right now on the best way to get around and the above places are on our list for places to go..
anyone have any hints on the sites and/or info on travel btwn the 4 ?
The best thing would be to fly into Italy and out of Russia on the same major carrier. Most US-like stringent airfare rules don’t apply with airlines like Turkish airlines or Aeroflot, where you may purchase same day fares or pay for a reservation close to departure.
If you’re going to more than one city in Turkey, don’t advise that you take the bus. In Russia, several tourists take the train between Moscow and St. Petersburg & Novgorod (bring your own snacks), else prefer to fly and join a sightseeing group wherever possible. The mood at the train stations provides a taste of what the Soviet Union was like. Of course, in Italy, I would recommend maximum surface travel.
Our plans so far..fly from SFO to frankfurt to moscow. take the train from moscow to st. pets for the return, the train (if i have my way) aeroflot (if hubby has his) back to to moscow. From moscow we fly to venice. we take trains/buses from venice to rome. we have tickets to have an audience with the POPE! and then rome to istanbul...istanbul back to frankfurt and i go on to pakistan while he goes to NYC...
