Turkey in early January

How is the weather and everything? Any suggestions on what to see/do there? Will 7 days be enough time to cover the major sites? Should I go for a package tour kinda thing or just plan it on my own? If so, can anyone guide me as to how to go about it and/or point me to any online resources?

Basically, anyone been there recently that I can bug for help? :sunny:

Re: Turkey in early January

Sweetness, where abouts in Turkey are you going?

I went to the southern coast, in July and it was Hot! We had a villa which we found on the net. Personally, I would plan on your own, Turkish people love Pakistani's so local's will help wherever they can.

I think Ruksarbibi has been in the Winter, she might know more about the weather thing.

Re: Turkey in early January

Mohabbatness, that’s what I am trying to figure out. I’ll definitely go to Istanbul. Not sure about the rest of the plan.

Where exactly did you go btw? By southern coast do you mean Kalkan?

Re: Turkey in early January

Yes luv, we went to Kalkan. It's quite an expensive place though, the tourists have kind of taken over, buying villa's and renting them out to other tourist's kind of thing. Local's take advantage of this as most tourists are British and usually pay whatever the asking price is. Plus, Turkey has changed over the last 10 years, and is trying to join the Euro, which means inflation. Kalkan, Fethiye, Kas are lovely places, but prices are more or less if not more than British prices. They are not that touristy either, most people who holiday there have families and go for a relaxing time, not site seeing. Theres honestly not much to see, no famous buildings, no mosques, nightlife consists of drunken British people, foods not all authentic Turkish either, in one restaurant they were trying to sell me mushroom soup!

Iv heard Istanbul is cheaper, and there would be more to see in terms of famous sites and all.

Let me know where exaclty you think you will go, and I will ask my Turkish friend if it's worth it or not.

Re: Turkey in early January

Hey Geek,

I went during my December holidays and had a wonderful time! People from Turkey scared me saying the roads are frozen, the weather is atrocious etc. but I was like I have already bought my ticket so I'm outta here. It was cold the first few days but after that it was gorgeous! And by cold, I don't mean immobile or intolerable. A warm jacket worked just fine for me.

I went with my Turkish friend who became my tour guide as the people in Turkey DO NOT SPEAK ENGLISH. If I didn't have my "tour guide" I would definitely have been lost on the streets of Istanbul. There is so much to do in Turkey. I was there for 10 days and covered pretty much all of Istanbul as there is the European side and the Asian side to see, and spent a day and a half in Bursa where we went up to the mountains (Uludag mountains).

If I had more time, I would have gone to the Southern region of Turkey which is mainly beaches and also the parts of Turkey where the old Greek architecture is still standing (temples et al.)

You can probably set aside 3-4 days just for Istanbul, but maybe if you go with a group, they might be able to cover Istanbul in just a couple of days.
If you are going for 7 days and want to cover a lot of ground, I would definitely recommend to go with a group :)
