Turkey Student Sentenced Over Scarf

ANKARA, Turkey (AP) - A Turkish court sentenced a university student to
six months in
prison for wearing an Islamic-style head scarf to her exams but commuted
the sentence
to a $3 fine, newspapers said Thursday.

The sentence was the first involving jail time for a breach of Turkey’s
strict secular
codes, which ban Islamic head scarves in public schools and state
offices. The
government regards scarves as political statements that threaten the
secular regime.

Nuray Canan Bezirgan, a former medical student at Istanbul University,
was convicted
Wednesday for attempting to take a test while dressed in a head scarf
three years ago.
She was not allowed to take the exam.

``I didn’t wear the head scarf to obstruct education,‘’ Aksam newspaper
quoted
Bezirgan as telling the court. ````I wear it because it’s God’s will.‘’

Several women, covering their heads in the Islamic style, attended the
hearing in a
show of support.

Salaam All. I think that its so unfair that the government of turkey is not allowing girls to wear scarves. are they trying to change the religion that most of the ppl of turkey are. I mean how is a scarf going to harm others its guns and violence that causr problem not girls wearing scarves. Is there anyway of contacting the government of turkey. they should be ashamed with themselves fro being so callow and dumb founded in not learning about the religion islam. I think its not right that she is getting sentenced fro 3 months in prison which is weighed somewhat the same as someone who killed innocent ppl or a rape case. Why are the other Muslim countries not intervening? May Allah bring some sense into the ppl of Turkey. JazackAllah

Very sad indeed.

Turkey should allow US Style democracy, as Turkey is still heavily under Military influenced policies that pride itself as being “secularist”. Islam or no Islam, no government should have any right on dictating dresses on its citizens. This kinda example is parallel to Afghans' strict dress code for its females. All nations should press Turkey to improve its record, both Human, and public policy. Turks should also be forced to give a separate country to Kurds. Turks have banned Kurdish language, and Kurdish customs. The present day Turkey Government is a savage and barbaric one.

Present day Turkey knows that to be part of EU they have to maintain a Secular Status. Any hint of Islamic Extremism can jepordize their future within the EU.

good point NYA

Chill chill chill people!!

You are talking about my other country over here.. Turkey is still under heavy Islamic influence.. the ruling party was totally Islamic a couple of years ago .. the point of concern here is that Turkey is furiously trying to get into the EU and is trying to bring some major reforms to please the other blasted nations.. I assure you this is all temporary… things will get better!!

Laterz all!!

Serhat Khan..

I have a Turkish friend, he tells me that in Turkey.. People working in the Army are not allowed to keep a beard and not just this they are not allowed to pray.. ~~> they are not allowed to read 'Namaaz' .. !!!

gizzy is right ... then there is the case of an elected rep who was forced to resign as she refused to give up her Hijab...

Serhat the Islamic party that briefly ruled turkey (rafah party) was toppled and banned..

Turkey is not the only Islamic country that is trying to appease the West by abandoning its religion. Adding to the list we have Tunisia where the same rules prevail. The former president Bourgiba not only barred women from wearing scarves but went a step further and ordered all working women to wear short sleeves. Men are not allowed to stay in mosques and the mosques are opened for only 15 minutes five times a day. Any youngster attending Fajr prayers regularly is taken for interrogation and if he persists praying is send to the Sahara.
The amazing thing is that noboby raises human rights issues here while all hell breaks loose when Taliban does something.
Why is it that westerners have different yard sticks for measure?
Hijab does not contitute extremism, it is part of Islam and mandatory for women, weather they admit to it to not.
