The man shaping the future constitution of the European Union was quoted on Friday as saying Turkey’s entry into the EU would be “the end of Europe”.
well for french EU is just a way to "take take take" they feel they can kiss german butt and rule EU by proxy. They have no pan european interests in mind just their own. The frnch stance on every single issue at EU will illustrate that.
If Turkey were to join the EU, it would be around 2010 or later. Before that period the EU wants to and has invited 10 East European countries to become members. In 2010 Turkey's population will have grown to nearly 85 million people, which would make it the largest EU member, overtaking Deutschland. Aside from bringing 85 million Muslims into this "Christian Club", Turkey would have the largest number of members in the European Parliament, and votes in the European Council, as well as commissioners. Then the EU would have to fork out tens of billions of Euro's annually to subsidise Turkey's huge agricultural sector, and many billions more to bring its economy into line with the rest of the EU. It has done this previously for much smaller states like Ireland, Greece and Portugal, which were way behind the EU when they first joined.
So culturally, economically and politically Turkey's membership would transform the EU, but is the EU not always going on about how open, democratic and global they are? :)
There is more religious and ethnicfreedom for Muslims in Britain then there is in Turkey... This is the country that wont let girls with Hijabs go to universities. Kurds are still having a hard time, not being allowed to express their cultural identity.
That sums it all up... Until there is more freedom, Turkey can sit and wait...

Turkey's links to Islam, and its historical drubbing of the EU members (in alliance with other Christian powers) will always make it nigh on impossible for Turkey to get membership of the EU.
right, and the eatsern european countries lining up to join EU are some models of freedom? they bring their own baggage.
dont forget that Yugoslavia was always pointed to as the wonderchild of eastern european countries.
why dont we look at the list of those former russkie pets of eastern europe that are linign up to join the EU and compare with Turkey

Gosh. You guys are so knowledgeable. Here is a Masters in EU law student who wouldn't know a thing about Turkey joining the EU.
But i'll take a shot - it's NOTHING to do with it being a Muslim country. :)
Ofcourse it doesnt... It all has to do with Turkey not allowing civil rights.
As much as they think they are doing the right thing, they are infact doing exactly what they shouldnt be.
You can think what you will, the central reason is there dislike of Islam and there deep mistrust of believers.
