Turkey-Egypt "Axis of Democracy" to dominate Middle-East Future

An interesting vision of the future by Ahmet Davutoglu, Turkey’s Foreign Minister. He’s predicting the emergence of a Turkey-Egypt alliance as the dominant force in the Middle-East.

ANKARA, Turkey — A newly assertive Turkey offered on Sunday a vision of a starkly realigned Middle East, where the country’s former allies in Syria and Israel fall into deeper isolation, and a burgeoning alliance with Egypt underpins a new order in a region roiled by revolt and revolution.

The portrait was described by Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoglu of Turkey in an hourlong interview before he was to leave for the United Nations, where a contentious debate was expected this week over a Palestinian bid for recognition as a state. Viewed by many as the architect of a foreign policy that has made Turkey one of the most relevant players in the Muslim world, Mr. Davutoglu pointed to that issue and others to describe a region in the midst of a transformation. Turkey, he said, was “right at the center of everything.”

He declared that Israel was solely responsible for the near collapse in relations with Turkey, once an ally, and he accused Syria’s president of lying to him after Turkish officials offered the government there a “last chance” to salvage power by halting its brutal crackdown on dissent.

Strikingly, he predicted a partnership between Turkey and Egypt, two of the region’s militarily strongest and most populous and influential countries, which he said could create a new axis of power at a time when American influence in the Middle East seems to be diminishing.

“This is what we want,” Mr. Davutoglu said.

“This will not be an axis against any other country — not Israel, not Iran, not any other country, but this will be an axis of democracy, real democracy,” he added. “That will be an axis of democracy of the two biggest nations in our region, from the north to the south, from the Black Sea down to the Nile Valley in Sudan.”

With this alliance, with Palestinians rejecting negotiations, with American and European economies going downhill, with extremist uncompromising government in power; I think Israel's bad days have started.

Re: Turkey-Egypt "Axis of Democracy" to dominate Middle-East Future

Too early to say considering the future is out on egypt's future and we don't know if Erdogan is for real (not blowing smoke to hide the fact that turkey is hosting anti-iran ABM shield) and how their military takes it, considering they are the counterparts of the pakistani military when it comes to "correcting" course of the nation.

Re: Turkey-Egypt "Axis of Democracy" to dominate Middle-East Future

I highly doubt Egypt is getting anything resembling a democracy. They already missed all their deadlines so far to transfer power to civilian hands. They were supposed to hold elections a few weeks ago in the original time table. Now its all been moved to November. Mark my words it will be moved again.

Re: Turkey-Egypt "Axis of Democracy" to dominate Middle-East Future

I think Davutoglu is underestimating Israel. Which is dangerous as Israel Armed Forces are pretty much up there as the best. To control a region you need economic and military might. Which Israel has and it will take many many years for Egypt to be there in Economic terms. Only Turkey can challenge Israel in real capacity. We all know what happened to Egyptian forces during 6 day war and Yom Kippur. With or without America Israel is too strong for any Arab country. The Turks could possibly challenge them though.

Re: Turkey-Egypt "Axis of Democracy" to dominate Middle-East Future

tru that the Western economies r wobbly and going down.......but can we simply translate tht into diminishing political power?........I think tht it won't be tht simple specially since all these countries r laced with the toys of massive destruction...........desperate situations warrant desperate measures...........and NATO has shown in recent year how desperate they r and how willing they r to break the law if it means protecting their economic/political interests for example in Libya .........

Re: Turkey-Egypt "Axis of Democracy" to dominate Middle-East Future

If we, the common people, know this much about capabilities of Israeli armed forces then it seems wrong to suggest that Davutoglu or Turkey would be stupid enough to underestimate Israel.
We don't know how far Turkey wishes to stretch this. It certainly is in no mood to declare war on Israel.

Re: Turkey-Egypt "Axis of Democracy" to dominate Middle-East Future

Political power is directly proportional to economic power. When economies are bad then political powers definitely diminishes. America did not attack Iran only because it can not afford this war.
This is not to say that their economies are bad enough to completely lose their political might AT THIS POINT. But if it continues and other players like China continue to grow then one-man-Western show will come to an end.

Re: Turkey-Egypt "Axis of Democracy" to dominate Middle-East Future

I agree with ur rationale but Chinese economy too is directly hanging of the Western model of economics..........China shows more concern than any other country whenever a bad news about the US economy breaks since US is the biggest consumer of the China made products..........is there any example of China practically challenging US policies or coming in the way of their policies anywhere int he world or say in the Middle East where most of the energy interests lye?
