Turkey Bans Education Minister for being too Islamic!

ANKARA, Turkey (AP) Turkey’s president blocked a lawmaker from becoming education minister because he had been fired as a university dean for alleged Islamist activities, the prime minister said Tuesday.

On Monday, new Prime Minister Abdullah Gul formed Turkey’s first majority government in 15 years after his Cabinet list won the approval of President Ahmet Necdet Sezer.

Gul, a moderate politician, confirmed newspaper reports that Besir Atalay had been selected for the education minister’s post but instead was named a state minister without portfolio after the president objected. Gul then appointed Erkan Mumcu — a former tourism minister who recently defected to the Islamic-rooted party — to take the job.

Atalay had been dean of the University of Kirikkale in central Turkey, but was sacked for allegedly appointing religious-oriented teachers and favoring students with Islamic views.

The secular Turkish establishment attaches great importance to maintaining a nonreligious education in schools, which many believe have become breading grounds for radical Islam. Female students who wear head scarves, for example, are banned from classes.

comment: Islam will not work in a secular system a clear example is turkey where even with a majority islamic party in power there are contradictions and clashes! Compromises are made and nothing changes at all the people are short changed once again!

I’ve got one thing to say on this: Turkey is the West’s #1 puppet.

ak47, thanks for voicing my exact thoughts on this :k:

Moona, can you enlighten us (and also yourself ) why you think Turkey’s problems have anything got to do with America? I know thanksgiving is next week, but it is only once a year.

I would appreciate some references from the Turkish press and also some from the British. Thanks.

Although there is a great deal of American influence in Turk domestic and foreign policies, NYA's comments raise this valid point - that Turkey is itself to blame for these policies.

The same could also be said for most of the semi-dictatorial states, that whilst the US persues its quest to be the supreme power on this globe, it is only the individual state that are to blame for succumbing.

They (in Turk) can only subdue the people and force-feed them extreme secularism for so long. When the majority raise their voices, then we will see another Khomeni and another popular revolution.

why do we insist on 'blaming' Turkey? it's their country and they can very well choose to take any direction.

Turkey should be applauded for taking steps to eliminate radical Islamic elements from their gov't.

So Stu supports and applauds the raping of women in turkish jails as steps to elminate islam in turkey because that is what is happening in turkey today!
