We were there in March 2006. Stayed in Sousse, which was really nice. We were just a few minutes away from Port El Kantoui which is an amazing development....
We visited Monastir, Port El Kantoui, the Colloseum (can't remember where that was exactly!) and loads more surrounding places...all by Taxi which was cheap enough.
We found our All inclusive deal through a great website called lowcostbeds.com which you can book all your flights and accomodation through.
One thing that really surprised me was that Islam isn't very prevalent there and it's such a shame that when my hubby asked about location of mosques and time for jummah namaaz, nobody could answer him, yet they were all muslims! He ended up wandering to locate it himself!
The sight of grown muslim men, greeting each other with salaam and having a bottle of beer in their hands was a real shock for me!!!
Also there is a lot of bidat......and everywhere you go, be prepared to be asked if you want to buy the "Hand of Fatima" which is something they believe in heavily over there!
On the whole though it's a nice country, nice to have a proper holiday (which isn't india or pakistan!!) and the weather was for us just right!
Even though we had an all inclusive deal, we still ate out a few times to savour local cuisine.....hubby especially liked eating fish at Port El Kantoui
Re: Tunisia?
I went there with friends a few years ago, i too stayed in the resort area of Sousse, which is largely the tourtist area of Tunisia with its blue waters and white sands.
Our accomodation was just minutes from the beach, the hotel ( 3 star) was nice and our rooms were sufficeintly equipped with the necessary essentials. Our package too was all inclusive as good restaurants are scarce and the service is poor. The food of choice on most menu’s we saw was, Couscous, vegetable stew, fish and meat dishes. Tip: avoid tap water and salads.
At the time we went a few years ago, alot of hotels were being built and in every direction we looked the area looked a building site. Unfortunately away from the coast, the region seems quite dull and there’s not much to really see and do and as a result i got a little bored after just a few days. There are a few several interesting sights such as the medina market and a few archeological museums that have a mixture of arab and roman architecture/ruins of days gone by.
A plus is distances in tunisia are relatively short and public transport is good, so if you have plenty of time and have little luggage, travelling on a combination of buses and taxis is the effective way of seeing the region. To know: the taxi service is similarly run as in Saudi Arabia, that drivers call out their destination and stop and set off again once they have the full compliment of passengers (five). This we found very frustrating. ![]()
As the above poster said, we didn’t seem many mosques and people there dont really pray, being that its largely a tourist resort and people prefer to stay at the beach and sip marguerritas.
As for the nightlife, there wasn’t much of it, just a few bars and clubs that for the most part were empty and played bland music. ![]()
As for shopping, i took some £500 ($1000) with me, but i was dissapointed that there’s not much there you would want to buy, they have the usual fake leather goods and brass/metal work which for the most part was pretty ghastly. :yukh: Then theres the carpets and ceramics and woodwork.
So yeah AE, if you need any further info. PM me. If the above has put you off, take a ferry from one of the ports for an 8 hr ride to Siciliy heading North East. ![]()
Re: Tunisia?
thanks guys for the detailed info. ![]()
see the reason I decided to go there was because my cousin’s BIL has a beach house there and he offered it to me. So free accomodations ![]()
but from what you are saying Orpheus…doesnt seem like to much fun ![]()
in all honesty…is it worth going if the the stay is free? I mean I much rather visit another country (ie turkey, Egypt, morocco, etc) if I am going to fly all the way over there and spend airfare money.
Re: Tunisia?
Be it that your accomodation is free, its not worth going, there really is nothing much to do or see there, its the beaches that bring in the tourists and that is all.
Morocco isn't too bad, egypt is ok...although its sparkle has long been diminished. My tip goto Sicily.
Re: Tunisia?
I found some interesting pictures of Tunisia

I’m surprised that the country isn’t very Islamic.
Re: Tunisia?

Re: Tunisia?
*coolmunda_2000 *
just because a country has a bunch of camels roaming around doesnt make it Islamic :p
PS. that mosque is beautiful!
Re: Tunisia?
^ I just assumed that as the country's factbook states:
Ethnic groups:
Arab 98%, European 1%, Jewish and other 1%
Religions:
Muslim 98%, Christian 1%, Jewish and other 1%
