Re: Tummy hurts so bad after I eat iftar (even if i eat very light)
Sorry for reviving an old topic but I assume many still have this problem and I couldn't help but contribute this which nobody seems to have mentioned.
The pain is caused by acidity and the most acidic of the acids is HCL which catalyzes the denaturing of protein in food (i.e. from meat). So, to avoid the pain, refrain from ingesting protein as the first food item at iftaar. Fat and starch digesting acids/enzymes do not cause acidity.
Also, milk is no good to relieve pain. Any bicarbonate will neutralize the acids as that's exactly what happens at lateral phases of digestion and to protect the stomach lining from being digested itself.
Also whoever said dates and are good for sehri because they keep you full for longer is talking bananas. Dates have a higher GI than glucose so get digested very quickly.

LOL. Are you sure about that? Glucose isn't even digested in the stomach - its just transported. And the glycemic index is based on glucose itself. The dates have to be digested (broken into glucose as well), so I don't think it can have a higher rate of digestion than glucose alone. Also, remember the GI is based on how quickly blood/sugar is raised and this isn't necessarily synonymous to the rate of digestion.

Obviously not as it was just something I read, however ignoring my poor knowledge on GI. I still think I am right that dates aren't the best choice for keeping you full for longer?

The Prophetic diet consisted too a large extent of just dates and water. They have pretty much everything you need to survive including protein and fibre and a lot of minerals.
You should give it a try at sehri. Some dates and a small handful of almonds and see how you get on.

Also, I don't get this 'fuller for longer' thing when it comes to ramadan. You are going to feel hungry from some point onwards whether that's 10am or 1pm. Feeling hungry and dealing with it is part of the whole thing.
So when it comes to what to eat, the focus should be on foods that give you as much of the essential things your body needs to survive. Considering that, dates are better than pretty much everything else that you could eat, whether that's a bowl of boxed cereal or a paratha and meat.

Yeah, probably not. Purpose is to go hungry anyways and worrying about foods that'll keep you full for longer, I think, is counter-intuitive. Anyways, harder to digest foods should do the trick, i.e. casein-consisting: milk, cottage cheese; fats: walnuts, peanuts, etc.; and, fibre: greens, oatmeal, whole grains, etc. The casein in one glass of milk will take around 6 hours to digest.
