very good sketch of a non-comittal stuck hood. the protagonist can't step forward and say it bravely, but knows that without saying, either it is absolute loneliness as an illusion of comfortable distance or a life long distancing that will be ever increasing and decreasing at the same time. non-speakability is a terrible strategy in case of true regard.
very few non-sentimentalists and true realizants can word this particular feeling of nostalgic-regret, if i read it correctly, in the way you have worded it.
