We have an Islamic School here who would like to hire a student in his final year of university to teach Math, English, Sciences, and Social Studies to about 10 students who are mostly in elementary and Middle school. This is a new service that they are starting and therefore are having a hard time deciding how much they should pay this student to teach.
Student Teacher’s job:
*Teach 4 subjects (English, Math, SS, and Sciences)
*Help them do the homework
*Test students
*Devote about 2-3 hours 5 days a week to teaching
*And other things that a teacher does
I have worked in my university’s Math department and we used to charge 20-30 dollars per hour on average to teach students in Middle and High Schools. I was suggesting to the principle that since most children will be of 5-8th grade, it could be around 20 dollars. But you have to keep in mind that the average rate of 20-30 dollars is for teaching one student, and in thise case, the teacher will be teaching about 10 students at a time and not 1 subject, but 4.
What do you all suggest that the should pay to the teacher that’s fair to both - Teacher and School. Thanks.
I would say about $ 25 per hour as you'll be teaching more than one student. $15 would've been enough if it were only one student, but in this case it's 8-10 of them, the rate should be a little higher.
Well you have to remember now that there’s a difference between the two institutions that you’re trying to compare.
For a University, they can afford to pay you taught for $20 ~ $30 / hour but I kinda doubt it for an Islamic school.
From what I know a couple of years ago, even the going rate to teach basic courses at a vocational school or a professional training school was around $30 ~ $40 / hour… so $25 to teach high-school kids sounds inflated.
The rates that an instructor charges are irrespective of the class size – there’s little difference in preparing a class session for 2 students and 10 students. If there is marking and other admin stuff involved, which is usually minimal in a tuition center type setting, then yes I understand that there’s more work, but even then, its usually not negotiated on a per student basis.
My inclination for something like this would be in the $15 to $20 range depending on what the school can afford.
Umar bhai, Thanks for replying. I think 20 would be fair. I'll ask them what they can afford to pay and then go from there.
Lussi bhai I have sworn that I will stay jobless but never work for a desi as they make you work like slaves but since this is Islamic school, I will make an exception. It's a private school, so I am sure they have enough money to pay me. I have stopped being nice to my own people because they don't give a damn if you are nice to them. However, they'll make a big deal if you are not nice to them.
After my interview, I realized that too. Now I am having second thoughts I am not a teacher type material. I lose temper and I don’t like kids. I explain with love for the first time, if they don’t get it, I start to get annoyed. I think I’ll charge them $ 50 an hour and then they’ll refuse to have me as a teacher.
It takes a special type of person to be a teacher. It requires lots and lots of patience, a cool and calm head. Not all of us are willing to go through such stress, kudos to all the teachers here :k:
Shikra-- Islamic schools are not funded by the government. In a lot of cases they get no financial assistance - mayhap some do, but for the most part its nil. So basically they have to run them by themselves, which means the teaching staff is not paid in the same terms as lets say in a public school. So do some research, find out how the school is doing, ask them lots of questions and take it from there. Good luck.
I did. The guy said don't worry about the pay. We have enough funds and it's a private school. They have more students but those are girls of elementary and middle school age and they don't need schooling. They just go there to recite Quran. Only the boys need the schooling. He clarified it for me and further said it's not like we'll pay you one month and the next month we won't have money to pay you. It's a regulated school and it's a private school, meaning each child pays a monthly fee.
So from what he said, sounds like they have enough funds. And like I said, I don't think I am the right person for this job, as I realized it after I left his office. The reason is because I won't teach because I love to do it. I will be teaching for the money. Someone like you MQ may teach there without worrying about the amount of salary because that's something you love to do and you are not doing that for the money. Teaching is a profession that requires so much attention, love, and patience. One would think teachers should be getting paid a lot because they are laying the foundation of our future, but unfortunately they don't get paid too much.
Plus, I've already told him how I've applied for an internship and if I get the internship, I will be unable to teach as I'll have evening classes and day time internship. So let's see what happens. I pray that I get the internship and they find someone better than me.
shikra why underestimate yourself??? you might like being a teacher once you have experienced it... you will never know if you are good with children unless you try it. I think your an intelligent person and love the way you explain your point in your post... to me you seem like a teacher kind of a person :) Good luck!!
Roshi don’t punish the children Shikra is smart but he doesn’t seem like a patient person, as he said so himself. I know this coz people tell me I should be a teacher, but I know myself, my personality and I could never be a teacher coz I just don’t have the personality.
I woudl say charge them $20.00 an hour and as far as being not being a teacher type of person, just relax and teach kids what you think they should learn, if they don't understand it is ok, because they are just kids. The important thing is that, make sure that teh students love you , and are always looking forward to meeting you, this way they will always remember you and love the subject that you teach them.
Roshi Thanks for the encouragement. You are right. I should give it a try and I know I can explain pretty good and get my point across but I lack patience. Well, I do have patience but not as much as a teacher should have. I’ve seen my teachers. Students ask questions that sometimes annoy me because they are so simple and common sense and I just feel like saying “What part of that do you not get?!?” I sometimes teach my sister and she’s a middle school student. She learns what I teach her and she never forgets it and that’s because I will teach with love for the first couple of times. If she doesn’t get it by the third time, then I get annoyed and teach her in a “you better get it this time” style and she gets me because she’s scared
It all depends on my internship. I am praying that I get an internship somewhere so I don’t have to teach, but If I don’t get an internship and even if I do get it, and I feel that I have some free time on my hands, I will give it a try.
