Re: Tuhfe Taha’if (Unwanted Gifts)

 There are these two twin cousins of us. One of them was brought up by our ammi and elder sister, as their mother is a working lady. so sis always takes stuff for her when she visits them. The other one always complaint ‘meri to koi value hi nahi’. Though sis also takes something for her as well.

Re: Tuhfe Taha’if (Unwanted Gifts)

Most people do bring bring gifts as it’s natural to want to gift things to your relatives. In my observation though, the absolute expectation that you bring something and that said something be high end/branded items isn’t really there (as has become the case in other cultures.) If you were to not bring anything, your relatives wouldn’t mention it and it probably wouldn’t cause any sort of rift.

That said, there is also individual difference and every culture has its share of individuals who are less than well mannered.

Re: Tuhfe Taha’if (Unwanted Gifts)

No we don’t get any special requests nor I think there’s ever any great expectation, the usual response to any question is often along the lines that ‘no no everything is available here’. But we tend to rely to chocolates and other funky souvenir type items for youngsters or sometimes we’d just give them a treat there.

But I really do appreciate people who bring Aab e Zam Zam from hajj or Umrah.

Re: Tuhfe Taha’if (Unwanted Gifts)

I think tendency of appreciating aab e zam zam was always there, because of religious factors. But when people start expecting or think of other options (gifts), some times, they don’t value these items, as mentioned in OP.

Re: Tuhfe Taha’if (Unwanted Gifts)

If you are talking about the example from Bano Qudsia story in the OP, then I strangely sympathies with the woman. There’s a hint of vulnerability, disappointment, meagerness and anticipation behind her request that makes her appear so human.
