trying to kick the habit

So i have bronchitis and all the joys it comes with, the chest pains, the cough, fever and fatigue. Went to the M.D. and got me some prescriptions.

The doc and I discussed my smoking habit and he asked if I wanted to quit, I said sure and he has prescribed me the nicotine patch and some anti-depressant pills to help with the cravings.

Im sitting here, with these medicines on the table. Im not sure if i can do it i.e quit smoking cigarettes. I have not put the patch on yet and have not taken those pills. I dunno if I can do it

How many of you can relate to my problem?

Anyone that may have quit smoking? Or known someone that did.

Do you have any tips to share to help the brotha out?

Re: trying to kick the habit

try putting naswar... it really helps

Re: trying to kick the habit

umm no, naswar, gutka, chewing tobacco etc are not an option

Re: trying to kick the habit

i've known ppl who've quit smoking i myself have done it thousands times longest i remember i gave up smoking was 2 months and 4 days. all you need is strong will power which most of us sootay baazes don't have...

Re: trying to kick the habit

I could easily say "It's not hard quitting, just do it" but then you would ask do I smoke and I would reply No to which you would reply "How do you know then?"

But...

I do have a very close friend who smoked for 10 years and then decided to stop it due to his father dying of lung cancer. In his own words it's a matter of will power!

He did not want his kids to face what he faced. He did not want his kids to lead a life without the support of a father. He didnt want his mum to mourn the loss of a son. It all comes down to Will Power.

Re: trying to kick the habit

i agree riz, will power and mind over mater :/

but gimme some more tips how to deal with the cravings

PS: i am first 8 hrs smokeless and unable to sleep :/

Re: trying to kick the habit

do you have children?

do you have parents?

If you do just take a look at their pictures and remind yourself that

"You will do everything in your power to ensure they do not lose a son/dad to this dreadful habit"

That should clam the cravings. Also make use of chewing gum

Re: trying to kick the habit

children no, parents yes

chewing gum got it already, trident with xylitol

Re: trying to kick the habit

You need strong resolve top give up smoking. If you lack that then you could try just reducing the number of cigarettes that you smoke before finally eliminating smoking.

As far as lack of sleep is concerned....you could try to take some herbal sleeping tablets or something.

I have never smoked.

Re: trying to kick the habit

I would go with Lajawab. You have to go "Cold Turkey". Even though I do not smoke but know many people who have been smokers and tried to quit. They use patch and other stuff but it does not work.

Make a decision, it is a bad habbit, waste of money and time and yes will kill you. Be strong, do not let it dictate your life. Just Quit!

Re: trying to kick the habit

Yes. One person quit smoking by going cold turkey and never picked it up again. Other weaned himself off after a family intervention.

A good friend tried the patch but picked up the habit again. You need will power more than anything else to quit.

Everyone that I know who smokes regrets taking up the habit.

Re: trying to kick the habit

cold turkey

Like lajawab I quit cold turkey. I think I have shared the story before, it was a new years resolutin to quit in the following year, January went, Feabruary went and while I had cut down I was still smoking, friends were giving me grief about my will power so I told them that the cigarette I was smokign was the last cigarette for me, they laughed, then i said okay forget about that , the next puff is the last puff and thats it, they laughed, I said..okay ...watch this. Tossed the cigarette and did not smoke at all for years.

Now I would smoke once or twice a year.

Re: trying to kick the habit

5abi... if you have bronchitis now, you know that if you keep smoking, it will only get worse over the years and your health will deteriorate further. Keep that in mind every time you feel the urge to smoke. My husband quit at the start of this month, and I know it's been hard for him. I keep plenty of sugar-free gum handy for him. Car, house, his coat pocket.... so that when his fingers itch for a cigarette, he finds a gum and chews on that instead. It's working so far. Try to take your mind off it as much as you can... when you start thinking about it, reach for a piece of gum, a drink of water, something that will keep you occupied elsewhere. Best of luck.

Re: trying to kick the habit

My dad quit cold turkey after his triple bypass.

My brother slowly quit when his wife was expecting because docs told him he'd have to change clothes, shower, wash hands, everythig, just to hold the baby (if he didnt wanna expose him to iT).

Re: trying to kick the habit

My best friend had thought of quitting for ages and then quit smoking, drinking and drugs all in the same week...! We had some really long chats and Masha'Allah he just came to the realisation that his life was far too precious and he didn't need any of this cr*p to be happy...

When I asked him how he managed it, he said it happened because that's what he really wanted...if you really want to quit - you will do it...good luck buddy :)
