I have a friend who is trying to get a job in the U.S.
The problem is that he is a Pakistani citizen and is currently living in the US under a student visa (did undergrad school here). He will be graduating in May.
Has anyone else known anybody who has actually succeeded in finding a job willing to take on a non-citizen without much work experience and do the paperwork for them to get a resident visa? How did they do it (as in, are there any good links or resources to look into, words of wisdom, etc.)
He’s trying really hard- sending his CV everywhere, taking advantage of contacts, etc. Still nothing comes up. He wants to go into risk management…
Re: Trying to get a job in the U.S.
There are a few options:
1) First off he should apply for a Canadian Immigration. I know a good few people in risk mgmt. Banks eat em up real quick.
2) Find a consulting firm - both large and small.
Large:
A) Deloitte, Mackenzie, Bearing Point, - all hire people on visa's.
Good firms, will train, small money initially - good experience.
B) Small Consulting Firms:
- Will train, rough employment terms, but a quick step into the job market and an instant H1B.
He'll have to research consulting firms in the risk mgmt market. But a good place to start is job sites like, Monster.com, Dice.com, Hotjobs.com etc.
Always post resumes on each and every job site you can find.
Site's like Monster cost employers in excess of $18000/yr - not all employers can afford that.
He should also hound his career counselors at school, they often have good leads.

can you tell me a little more
his university
gpa
major
amount and type of work experience, and with what companies.
companies like accenture and IBM have been hiring people like crazy, but you have to make a case for yourself.
there are many folks here who were in the same boat as him, spock is one that comes to mind. they may be able to give you a good sense of what it is like right now and what they did.
I think by far the best way to land a job is through the universitiy's on campus recruiting and interviews.
Re: Trying to get a job in the U.S.
Leaving aside issues surrounding finding a job and an employer, if he needs a work visa right now, he is out of luck till next year. After graduation he should get OPT for 12 months and apply for H-1B visa next year in April. He will have a few months disconnect between the end date of his OPT (May 2008) and start date of his H-1B visa (Oct 2008). Or, absurd as it may sound, he should get married to a US citizen and avoid many of these problems.
By the way, he should seriously consider delaying his graduation till Oct 2007.

Nice Advice....He should delay it...till october..This years H1 is already capped. If he insists on staying then marriage is the next option, but first think about it many times.
Re: Trying to get a job in the U.S.
He should certainly delay his graduation, to December. Or he will heading home in May next yr for sure.
And yes, that is due to the visa cap that has been met.

Thanks so much, everyone. I've passed on your comments to him- hopefully they'll give him some new ideas.
