Re: Try this out: Rainbow Waffles
It’s a cute idea, but I don’t think it’s worth it:
- Waffles, particularly home-made ones, are yummy and fun to eat, even without all the colors.
- Food dyes have been implicated in way too many illnesses. You can of course use natural ones, but the colors are rarely so saturated. You can get yellow by adding haldi to the mix, paprika for orange. Beet root will probably get you a pink, rather than red. Spinach may get you a light green. Not sure you could get a good blue easily. Blueberries usually get you more of a purple.
Re: Try this out: Rainbow Waffles
I guess occasional use of food colours is ok ![]()
We do tend to enjoy them in cakes anyways , so why not any other stuff ?
Plus things like these can really make for an attractive dish , for special occasions or parties coz it improves presentation of the same old stuff by 100% . What say?
Re: Try this out: Rainbow Waffles
Of course, but I am just as happy with regular ones, that’s all, so I wouldn’t make the extra effort.
I don’t add artificial food coloring in anything made at home. Of course, you’re right stuff we buy outside probably has it.
Re: Try this out: Rainbow Waffles
They look so unhealthy! Only because of the colours and what S02 said. Pretty, but not good for you.
Re: Try this out: Rainbow Waffles
wow , I thought they looked awesome ![]()
Re: Try this out: Rainbow Waffles
You’re still doing good though, by at least limiting your exposure to them.
Artificial colours are almost all carcinogens
They’re derived from coal tar after all…
Re: Try this out: Rainbow Waffles
Now imagine doing the same process for not one, but several waffles. It’s labour intensive.
Re: Try this out: Rainbow Waffles
^I agree.
Another thing I’ve noticed is that colour also affects people’s perception of the taste of a dish. People seem to find attractively coloured things more appealing. For instance, I’ve made red velvet cake both with and without food colouring (on different occasions). I used the exact same recipe both times (with the exception of the food colouring), the only difference being that one was a muted brick red and the other was bright red. Interestingly though, I received much better feedback about the bright red cake, so I think how visually appealing something is definitely affects people’s perception of taste.
