Trust Issues

I used to work as a Student Assistant at the university when I didn’t have a real job and one things the American staff always complained about is the trust issues with the new South Asian students.

For example, at orientation they are told that they cannot register before a certain date and time, but thinking they can get past this requirement somehow they will first ask around the old students if they can somehow register before the specified time. When told they can’t, they will go ask one administrative person, then another than another ..

It would really make the staff mad because it gave the impression that the person doesn’t value their input and is not satisfied with their answers. I guess being professionals they got offended.

In the beginning I tried to defend my fellow Desis by saying that it is not a cultural thing but mainly cos they are new to the system and sometimes language barrier makes it all so difficult. But after a while I realized that Chinese, Malaysians, Koreans or South Americans don’t do that .. it’s only the desis.

Re: Trust Issues

Its a reflection of society AJ...the web of rules and regs in combination with incompetent people running things in Pakistan leads to the creation of people at senior posts who don't have a clue..and because sticking to regs and rules is usually not the done thing..there usually is someone around who can find a way to get around them.

Re: Trust Issues

They all do …you just havent seen it. All people specially people from other , mostly third world countries behave the same way. It is not that the desi is not trustworthy necessarily, it is more like that the gora is not trustworthy to us desis.

Re: Trust Issues

ahamdjee - find a second job you got a lot of time in your hands to waste...

It happened to me twice where i was giving the wrong direction so yeah its the matter of trust. There is nothing wrong to double check yourself.
