WASHINGTON, Aug 2 (Reuters) - President Donald Trump’s doubts about the war in Afghanistan has led to a delay in completing a new U.S. strategy in South Asia, skepticism that included a suggestion that the U.S. military commander in the region be fired, U.S. officials said on Wednesday.

During a July 19 meeting in the White House Situation Room, Trump demanded that his top national security aides provide more information on what one official called “the end-state” in a country that the United States has spent 16 years fighting against the Taliban with no end in sight.

No wonder it is taking forever. Now US army, sailors, airmen and marines will stand guard while probably chinese companies mine the riches?

At least the guy is honest about his intentions…

Re: Trump Reportedly Mulls Firing U.S. Military Commander In Afghanistan

Afghanistan is a graveyard of aggressors…usa can never win there no matter how many decades they try.
I suspect even face-saving exit is now not possible. It will sink american finances even more.
no matter what, usa has lost it everywhere…vietnam, afghanistan, iraq, syria, libya, etc.

Re: Trump Reportedly Mulls Firing U.S. Military Commander In Afghanistan

They can always blame Pak army/ISI after all they need an escape goat. - US will be better of wiggling & jiggling its behind in front of Shri little Kim it may yield results no matter how embarrassing they may be for the good old amreeka.

All said and done, like they say “Success has many fathers failure is an orphan” Welcome to ground realities.

Trump is an intelligent person as he plans to pull his troops from Afghanistan and going to hand over Afghanistan to private contractors like black waters etc.

Re: Trump Reportedly Mulls Firing U.S. Military Commander In Afghanistan

I think his biggest asset is that people underestimate him, that is how he won the election. I truly feel that Obama created this mess by being too afraid to take action, he is going hard after ISIS and next will be Afghanistan and regime change in Pakistan also points towards serious action against terrorism.

Re: Trump Reportedly Mulls Firing U.S. Military Commander In Afghanistan

There hasn’t been any policy change viz ISIS as Trump usually blows hard then finds out that it is too hard (governing is not a joke) and then quietly follows Obama policies. The only thing that could be different now is that US is now ‘loose’ with what qualifies as collateral damage but that will come to haunt everyone if Sunnis are still alienated in the region.

As for afghanistan, the official reason is that America is securing Afghanistan so that Pakistan isn’t destabilized along with the usually AQ in afghanistan line. You can call it the US playing spoiler in the region and putting an eye on Pakistan so it doesn’t drift far away from US orbit but ultimately, US can’t f**k up a 200 million strong country with nuclear weapons. Compared to us, af ghaa nis tan is a sideshow at best.

Re: Trump Reportedly Mulls Firing U.S. Military Commander In Afghanistan

^^^ I know most hate him including me but he could be the best thing that happened for muslims, no chemical attacks by Assad after American strike also. I bet you anything NS went because of not enough action against terrorists. Obama was disengaged and that caused all this escalation. Obama did not believe in ANNIHILATION and this is what is the key word. Mandate is to keep ANNIHILATING until everyone gets the message and settle down, these people take kindness for weakness.

Under Trump, gains against ISIS have ‘dramatically accelerated’ with nearly a THIRD of all territory taken from ISIS in Iraq and Syria since 2014 having come in the past six months

  • So far, the US has reclaimed 78 per cent of ISIS-occupied areas in Iraq and 58 per cent of those in Syria
  • In total, that’s around 27,000sqm of territory, 8,000 of which has been taken since February of this year
  • **A State Dept envoy - who held the same job under Obama - said Trump’s changes helped spur those wins **
  • They include delegating decisions to military heads and engaging in a so-called ‘campaign of annihilation’
  • That means cities are surrounded before attacks to ensure no militants are able to escape elsewhere
  • ISIS has also lost around 45 per cent of Raqqa, the Syrian city that acts as the nerve center of its ‘Caliphate’
  • **And although the relationship with Russia has deteriorated, their militaries speak daily, the envoy said **

The war against ISIShas taken dramatic strides sinceDonald Trump became president, with the US and its allies reclaiming swathes of Iraqand Syria.
In fact, of all the land reclaimed by the US-led coalition since 2014, nearly one third has been taken since Trump took office.
**That’s thanks to Trump’s decision to delegate decisions and engage in a ‘campaign of annihilation,’ Brett McGurk, the State Department’s senior envoy to the anti-Islamic State coalition, told the Washington Post. **
