Why does Russia want the Crimean peninsula so bad anyway? Out of all the land that they lost in the Soviet fall out, why is this piece of property so important?
Iy used too be part of Russia from 1783 to 1954, then they donated it to Ukraine, never expecting Ukraine to actually separate and be truly independent.
Situation in Ukraine is pretty bad. I see next Syria into making. Why in the bloody world Russia is interfering in Ukraine??...This is sickening..so many ppl loose thier lives..sad really.

The Russian stock market was down 10% at opening and the Ruble at an all time low against the Euro. Russia faces significant sanctions and political castration for this invasion. While Russia can use it's energy exports as a weapon, doing so makes them an unreliable partner in the future. The good news in all of this is Europe will likely double down on it's effort in producing alternative energy to lessen it's reliance it's on Russian gas and oil.

You assume that Putin will act logically. Angela Merkel is describing Putin as having lost touch with reality.... rational behavior is no longer guaranteed.
My worry is if he gets convinced that there will be some form of Western military intervention and decides to take pre-emptive action....

Let us not talk about the Muslim factor in this whole complex situation lest TTP should take matter in its hands and declare jihad both against Russia and the new Ukrainian government.
On a serious note, Washington has successfully managed to create a situation in Ukraine to engage Russia in the trouble nation and avenge diplomatic defeat it was meted out to in Syria largely thanks to Moscow. By securing permission from its parliament to cross into Ukraine, Putin seems to have walked into the trap the US laid for him wherein he will have to face the combined wrath of the entire EU bloc, plus the US itself.
Tough situation for the tough guy.
Who thinks that Obama actually couldn't pull a Libya over Assad if he wanted to? Sure, there is the UN but it was taken along for Libya.
I think the bigger question is that is Israel on board? They rather deal with the devil they know than the one they don't, not that Assad has been such a devil to them with them taking out missile deliveries to hezbollah. Ok, there is the rebel excuse now but why didn't Syria respond back to the IDF airstrike on their reactor if they couldn't identify the israeli jets that swooped in from the weak spots in the air defenses? Why not do a retaliatory strike on golan heights?

Not that Ukrainians are a better lot.
There are a lot of right wing racist nazi types in Ukraine and they hate Muslims and foreigners.
Russia is full of them as well with battery against foreigners, especially those who look 'muslim', after attacks. It is an irony that there are neo-nazis considering what hitler thought of these slavs. For better or worse, hitler could have kept european russia had he played his cards right by not enforcing the nazi racial superiority bs on the captured slavs like ukrainians. A part of me thinks that he probably would have been afraid of at best loosing his cred, but at worse getting killed like rabin if he had toned down his nazi policies in russia. German military superiority and stalin's attrocities were a potent mix that germans were unable to take advantage of fully early in the war.
Why not give Cremea a referendum on whether they wanna be ukranian or Russian?? But place conditions on it, one of them being that in the event of Cremea choosing go.ukranian, if Russia continues with its occupation, implement severe economic sanctions.

I guess that part of the problem is that there is a treaty signed by 4 countries (Ukraine, Russia, UK, USA) by which Ukraine gave up its nuclear weapons in exchange for the other 3 countries guaranteeing Ukraine's territorial integrity.
Ukraine will view itself as having been tricked out of its weapons if 1 or more of the signatories to that treaty proceeds with actions to compromise that guaranteed territorial integrity. Until 1994 Ukraine had the 3rd most powerful nuclear arsenal in the world.
Technically, that could be handled by agreeing to give back to Ukraine an arsenal of several hundred strategic hi-yield nuclear warheads and missiles and then renegotiating its territorial status....

And so it begins. The leader of the Muslim Crimean Tatars has been banned from entering Crimea. Those Muslims protesting this are being arrested

DONETSK: Pro-Russian separatists in eastern Ukraine ignored a public call by Russian President Vladimir Putin to postpone a referendum on independence, declaring they would go ahead on May 11 Sunday with a vote that could lead to war.
Denis Pushilin, a leader of the self-declared separatist Donetsk People’s Republic, said on Thursday that the “People’s Council” had voted unanimously to hold the plebiscite as planned.
“Civil war has already begun. The referendum can put a stop to it and start a political process,” he told reporters.
The announcement coincided with a sharp change of tone from Moscow, which had signalled a pullback from confrontation on Wednesday with Putin’s call for the vote to be delayed.
Meanwhile Russian ambassador to Paris said Putin, would join them in a ceremony to mark the 70th anniversary of the Normandy landings in World War Two.
One after another, Ukrainian regions falling for Russia. Looks like United Nations would finally need to intervene to stop rampaging Putin.

Crimean Tartars have now been banned from holding their annual rally commemorating how Russia deported them from Crimea in 1944.

How do you expext the United Nations to do anything? As a Permanent Member of the Security Council , Russia is allowed to veto anything at all that the UN tries to do about the situation.
