Trip to Hunza & Khunjerab Pass

This trip surely takes me down the memory lane. Year 2005, final semester of BCS class, lots and lots of memories. Too bad time flies so fast!

**
Destination:** Hunza (Karimabad), Nagar Valley and Khunjerab Pass right up to Pak-China Border
**
Date: **6th to 11th July 2005

Depart City: Wah Cantt

Mode of Transport: Toyota High Roofs x 2

Time to reach destination: Approx 20hrs to reach Karimabad by road. Lots of stops on the way.

Camera+Lens: At that time I was too poor to afford a camera  These pictures were taken by two guys in our group who had 1 or 2 mega pixel cameras. In 2005, the phone cameras were crappy.

Here we go…

Re: Trip to Hunza & Khunjerab Pass

These Pictures are mostly taken from moving vehicle. The river you see is Indus, and places are Mansehra, Bisham, Chillas… going towards Gilgit.

Re: Trip to Hunza & Khunjerab Pass

Hunza, Karimabad. Beautiful and Clean. I still remember the whole area was in pristine condition, no garbage, no beggars, Peaceful place to be. The Fort you see is Hunza Fort. We had a guided tour inside.

Re: Trip to Hunza & Khunjerab Pass

**Nagar Valley, just across Karimabad. We took jeeps for a day trip. Part of road was non-metallic and pretty narrow as well. Certainly not for urban drivers. May be the road has improved after all these years. **

Re: Trip to Hunza & Khunjerab Pass

**Glacier in Nagar Valley, note the thick black snow, its decades old.
**

Re: Trip to Hunza & Khunjerab Pass

**On our way towards Khunjerab Pass. The real fun area, we were fortunate that we travelled on KKH before the Atta-abad incident when the glacier came down and drowned large part of the KKH. Nowadays there is a huge lake and boats are used to go towards Khunjerab Pass.
**
The first picture is of the landslide area. Stones continuously came down from the slope when we passed it. The second picture shows the tributary of river Indus. The water passed so fast that it was impossible to hear anyone.

Re: Trip to Hunza & Khunjerab Pass

ow wowwwwwwww!!!! sooooo beautiful...stunning scenic beauty. i wish i can go there some day. i will, iA.

Re: Trip to Hunza & Khunjerab Pass

**Finally the Pak-China Border. We reached there around noon time. There was no one on Pakistani side. The Chinese were patrolling their side. There is a buffer zone where we went and took photos with Chinese soldiers.

Even in July it was extremely cold. The border open from May until September. Locals of Gilgit and Hunza can go to China side without visas and same is for Chinese citizens. They can come until Gilgit. The last major town on Pakistani side is Soust dry port. Many Chinese had shops, restuarants there. The dry port was full of containers of China goods.**

Some shots of Rakaposhi Mountain.

**and Nanga Parbat!
**

Overall the trip was memorable, exciting and full of adventure. If any of you ever get a chance to visit these places, don’t hesitate. You will remember the trip for your whole life. The other side of Sakardu and Deosai is also worth a visit.

Re: Trip to Hunza & Khunjerab Pass

Amazing photos. Would love to visit one day :insh:.

Re: Trip to Hunza & Khunjerab Pass

I’m pretty sure there is a picture of me and my brother on this same spot, from when we went there sometime late 90’s.

I could be wrong though…there are so many glaciers like this up north. It’s so amazing every single thing there.

Re: Trip to Hunza & Khunjerab Pass

very beautiful place.

Re: Trip to Hunza & Khunjerab Pass

Very nice pictures. :k:

How do you get to travel so much ?

Is it all leisure or in a professional capacity ?

Re: Trip to Hunza & Khunjerab Pass

Love these shots of RP and NP.

Have seen so many pics of NP but the last one is unique. :k:

Re: Trip to Hunza & Khunjerab Pass

This particular trip was in 2005 when I was young and doing BCS from COMSATS. It was our class trip in final semester.
I like to travel and since I’m alone so its bit easy. Some trips are part of my work but some are for getting rid of boredom.

Re: Trip to Hunza & Khunjerab Pass

Is it an expensive hobby ?

And all those European trips you took were by yourself ? :hmmm: That’s interesting.

Re: Trip to Hunza & Khunjerab Pass

There is no cheap hobby except *Pooondi! *

Anyhow like I said some trips were part of my work so the travel and stay during the work was paid for. But the trip to Lisbon was on my own and if you plan ahead the trip can be very cheap for example I got the Lisbon return ticket for 45 euro in winter. The normal price can be between 150 to 250+euro depending on the season.
