Tribute to the Iceman: Steve Waugh

This guy is one of my favourite all time cricketers. He’s been dropped from Australia’s WC squad after leading them through their most successful period ever. The critics were sharpening their knives after his shaky knock last time out; yesterday he walked out in front of his home crowd with the Aussies in trouble and smashed his 29th century and rammed the words right back down their throats.

It was a great moment and the ovation he got from a packed MCG was something worth seeing.

I still say his single-handed defeat of SA last time round in the WC was the best 1 day innings I have ever seen considering the importance. A true Great :k:

Very True.
Aussies are gonna miss his experience in WorlCup.
They wil regret it.

I agree 100%.

He is truly one of the best of his times. The reason for his fabulous success was his icy calm, solid temperament and never-say-die spirit. Through his leadership, Aussie team shaped up in a ruthless, calculating, constantly winning machine; second to none.

I never considered him the best batsmen of the present era, but I think he played more match-winning knocks than many other, much more hyped batsmen.

I wonder if years from now, Pakistan can steal him to be our coach or manager. :)

This is the reason why I respect this guy so much. He does not have the best looking strokes, or the natural flair of so many players on the scene today, but when the chips were down he would always come up with the goods. That knock yesterday was just typical. The aussies will surely miss his leadership.

yeah and though they are right to presume that thier winning streaks will contintue even if they remove Waugh from captaincy, they are mistaken coz his attacking skills as captain are not seen in Ponting to this extent. And Ponting already showed he runs out ofidea sometimes. Examples?? Well, against Pakistan in june, against Sri lanka in september and on couple f occassions against SA.

Steve Waugh is to Cricket what Holyfield is to Boxing. Not much style but plenty of substance. I don't know of a single Pakistani cricketer (except Miandad) who plays the game with the same temperament Steve does.

But I think you are all under-mining Ponting's abilities as a captain. This guy is very very competitive. You just have to see him doing fielding. He is also a very aggressive batsman.

Steve Waugh was lucky as a captain since he had Warne and McGrath in the peak of their careers. Ponting will definitely miss Warne once he retires.

Steve Waugh as a batsmen, as a captain and as a tactician is one of the best I have seen in the cricketing world.

Great Fighter. He is like Imran Khan. Emotion less and always has a control over the action in the ground. He never let game or emotion over take him.

He might not be among the most naturally talented or nature-made batsmen of the world but he tried hard to achieve the place where he is.

Yeah, he is one of the greatest batsmen and captain of all times, and it is the ACB's stubborn attitude cuz of which he isn't in the world cup bound team. Australia will miss him and even moreso if they dont lift the trophy

You bet he cant be a Nakhrey Wala. It takes something more than he has to be a Nakhrey Wala :)

Steven Waugh, what a player. The finest captain in the world, maybe of alltimes, a brilliant batsman, gutsy and proud. He is one of the alltime greats.

No praise is high enough for this man, brilliant. Utterly brilliant.

A legend of the game and role model for many cricketers around the world.

The Game Responds:

*This thread is so touchy. Really. Not every batsman has the unique quality of getting his team out of trouble when it needs him the most; Steve Waugh, once he retires, can stay proud of the fact that he achieved that more consistently than many of the other overrated shmucks in world cricket today. People, That Is All.*

Couldn't have said it better.

We South African has come to hate the man because he masterminded this psycological problem we have when playing the Ausies, but has to admit he is one of cricket's All Time Greats of the world scene.

If ever I needed someone to bat for my life, I would choose Steve Waugh....

Steve Waugh acknowledges the crowd after his team's win over Bangladesh

I'm truly lost for words here! There is not an adjective in the English language to describe the level of Steve Waugh's greatness. In the first Test against Bangladesh, Steve managed to achieve another 3 milestones. Every damn time he is criticised, he proves his critics wrong.

Steve Waugh is now the most successful Captain of all time in Test Match Cricket; and that is on both wins and a percentage ratio on the amount of matches won to captained. He now has 38 wins under his belt, surpassing Clive Lloyd and he has over a 70% win ratio of all Tests he has captained Australia in. Also, he is now top of a list which includes the likes of Clive Lloyd, Sir Vivian Richards, his fellow countryman Allan Border, Hansie Cronje etc etc. His next goal will be to get to 40 Test Match victories and possibly get his winnin percentage ratio into the highest 80's or by the end of his career, possibly even as high as 90 and possibly then get to 50 Victories as captain.

Steve Waugh is now also only the second player in the history of the game to have scored Test Centuries against every other Test Playing nation in the world. Though, I think that one is a little mis-leading as there weren't so many Test Playing nations before the likes Viv and Don probably did score centuries against every side they played against. It's just now there are a lot more sides. But still a great achievemnet by Steve Waugh.

And the third milestone is that he is now the equal second highest century scorer in the games history. He now equals Sachin Tendulkar on 31 Centuries and is now only 3 behind all-time leader Sunil Gavaskar who scored 34 in his career. I reckon Sachin Tendulkar may go on to break that record eventually but I think Steve will at least surpass Gavaskar into second spot.

So all that achieved in just one Test Match. What a player! He is truly one of the all time greats of the game.
