"It’s unlikely that the Field Marshal’s exploits were part of his school curriculum, but with a politician’s unfailing eye for the telling gesture,** the Democratic Presidential candidate on Monday released a statement condoling Manekshaw’s death, describing him as “a legendary soldier, a patriot, and an inspiration to his fellow citizens.”
“Field Marshal Manekshaw provided an example of personal bravery, self-sacrifice, and steadfast devotion to duty that began before India’s independence, and will deservedly be remembered far into the future,” Obama said, offering "deep condolences to the people of India.** "
Wow i never expected Barak to say anything or even to notice this.
he was a soldier and he did what every soldier is supposed to do to follow orders.
if you want to blame someone blame it yourself (us) for allowing them to do exploits..
I think it is difficult for Pakistanis that great generals, having performed par excellence can remain generals without effecting a coup. Why else would somebody come here and curse him after he died!
May be I shouldn't generalize to all Pakistanis and target it to only the idiots who do that
...Why else would somebody [of Pakistani origin] come here and curse him after he died!
....
GS! Simple! People have heard that Sam Mankeshaw was responsible for attack on East Pakistan.
You see! Mukti Bahini, Indira and Manekshaw are treated in Pakistan just like you as an Indian would treat Sant Bhindranwalay, Punjabi separatist movement, and may be Zial huq. If you perceive someone trying to break your country, you won't garland them with flowers won't you!
You should appreciate that many Pakistani with good grasp of Military history are only saying good words for Sam.
^ I see what you mean but do you really think Manekshaw was responsible for 'attack on E.Pakistan' (or are you saying the haters feel that way)?
There is no comparison at any level between Bhindranwalay who I think was a Khalistan separatist and Manekshaw who was a regular army commander. Don't much about what Zia did (except he was a supporter of islamic fanatics and was blown up by his own people), so won't comment on that.

You don't know that. Pure speculation, nothing else

relax PG! that 'stupid Indian general' is the one credited with engineering your surrender.
Which is one of the reasons we fondly remember Sam Manekshaw.
^^ yeah in Indian Dreams, not in Pakistan. As i said earlier, you want to praise him, wrong place, wrong Forum. Start Indian Links and speak as much as u like. But guess what, there wont be anybody else, besides you.
P.S Make sense for a change, if you have limited knowledge, Dont make Fool outta yourself. you smell like bad indian curry!

Bad Indian curry? Stop eating at 'Indian' restaurants run by Pakistanis and you'll get some good Indian curry.
So you're suggesting to admins here to change this to IndianLinks?
RIP Manekshaw! India respects you and Bangladesh revers you! PartyG types shiver at your name!

so you want Pakistanis to start indianlinks and beat the crap outta junky indians like u? sure! i am always ready to kick sum indian Butt, .....hmmm but u smell bad...really bad...proly just came back from delhi after meeting wid Khussra frens at LAL QILA..
A soldier is a soldier on whichever side. Many senior and retired officers of Pak army respect their counterparts on Indian side and especially old-world colleagues such as Manekshaw.

Indians may respect him for his military skills.
BDeshis hardly revere him. Heck BDeshi butchered their own founder within two years of the so-called independence. This is how they "rewarded" their Bangla Bandhu and Bandhu's entire family -1. You can well imaging what would happened to Mankeshaw in BDeshi hands.
PartyG is just frustrated I can tell. But surely he is not shivering at least judging by his posts. If you have seen him in person and he indeed was shivering then that's a different story.
Coming back to Manekshaw, he was honest enough to confess that Indira trained 60,000 Bengali and Indian insurgents and pushed them into a sovereign county. This was especially heinous considering that Pakistan had not attacked India, not at that point.
Would the rest of the Indians be that honest and confess?
Pakistan started the massacares in Bangladesh much before Mukti Bahini was trained. Gen Yahya Khan is said to have made a statement … “Kill 3 million of them and the rest will eat out of our hands.” This was in March 1971, much before any trouble had started.
So please dont blame India for this … it was Pakistan’s mess and they could not handle it … Indira Gandhi went to US to get Nixon to stop Ayub Khan … but he was supporting Ayub … so things did not work out there. As a last resort India had to act … just like Pakistan had to in case of Afghansitan … by propping up Taliban.
But you must admit India never went back to Bangladesh after that war in 1971 … even if they had internal turmoil… goes to show India had not territorial ambitions on east pakistan. US went to Germany & Japan in second world was … it is still there.
East Pakistan was liberated by the Indian forces but it was a political decision and so was to move out ot Bangladesh.
It was rumored after 1971 that Sam was trying to topple the Indira governement. So she confronted Sam and he replied pointing towards his long nose " I don’t use it to poke into others’ affairs"

Manekshaw’s war
By Commodore (retired) Najeeb Anjum For 36 years now India’s first field marshal has been the icon of heroism.
Repeating high school history ad nauseam is not going to help you.
Here is a simple fact.
Pakistan army action on extremists and insurgents started in the night of 25/26 march. And Indian army was asked to take an action in early April. Here is a quote from Gen. Jacob.
Lt Gen Jacob’s memoirs state: (Page 35 et seq)
"At the beginning of April, the Army Chief called me on telephone to say that the Government required Eastern Command to move immediately into East Pakistan.
How could you defend with a straight face the orders to Indian army in the first week of April? within few days of **Pak army’s action within its own territory **and not Indian area.
As I said, Indians should be as honest as Manekshaw. I think it is really difficult. Won’t you agree.
