Treating Depression

I have been a very positive person all my life …I always motivate my friends n family in depression to think positively and hope for the best. But lately I have been under severe stress due to some personal issues. Just got to read this article and I feel I am under depression:

  • This article from Family share tells about the signs of depression

    1. Deep sadness ( am feeling sad all the time only my children help me feel happy)We are all sad and discouraged from time to time. Often we wish we could stay in bed and not go to work. But intense and frequent periods of sadness can lead to depression. With that depressive sadness comes sobbing, isolation, hopelessness and the feeling of loneliness.
    1. Sleep disorders ***(unable to sleep at night despite being tired)***Because of the anxiety that often accompanies depression, it is common for a person to have insomnia. And when sleep does finally come, it’s often restless and unrefreshing, which makes you tired in the daytime.
Another disorder commonly associated with depression is hypersomnia, which is the opposite of insomnia. It’s a condition where the person finds it difficult to stay awake during the day and get excessive sleep at night.
    1. Negative thoughts ( I dont feel like trusting anyone …hating life)“Life sucks!”,“People don’t like me,” “I can’t do it!”, “I’m a failure!”,“There’s no use trying.”, “I’m ugly/fat/clumsy!”,“It would be better if I were dead.”,“I can’t trust anyone!”,“I’m going to kill myself!” These are all examples of the types of negative thoughts that accompany depression. Those who are depressed lose belief in themselves, others and in life.
    1. Disinterest and apathyIf you lose interest in people, sex, working, having fun, or life in general, you likely have depression.
    1. Low self-esteem (this is the only thing i dont have and i am rather much confident for fighting for myself)Low self-esteem generates anxiety, fear and depression. A person with a low self-esteem doesn’t consider himself or herself to match up to those around him either physically or intellectually.
Studies show those who are obese are 25 percent more likely to have depression than those who are not. Those who are underweight are also more likely to suffer from depression.
    1. Laziness in getting ready (dont feel like going out)A person with depression often loses pleasure in things like getting dressed, taking a shower or being beautiful.
    1. Physical pain (abdominal pain is there, headaches…down with flu n cough)In addition to deep sadness, depression manifests itself physically through various types of pain. Experts say that some people who are depressed become more sensitive to pain. The most common symptoms are:

[LIST]

  • Abdominal pain and gastrointestinal discomfort, including disorders such as gastritis and irritable bowel syndrome (among others).

  • Headaches.

  • Pain caused by muscle tension especially in the neck, shoulders and back.

  • Pain and tightness in the chest.

  • A sensation of having something stuck in the throat.

I try to remain bz and pray to Allah but nothing is helping to reduce depression…cant go to a Dr for it i cant take medicines n all…any suggestions?

Re: Treating Depression

Stylo, depression is a very real illness and a serious one. It can hurt our soul really badly if it goes untreated .

Before going down the medication route , try a few things .

1- Read religion. Islam has answers to all our questions. I admit I have seen the worse of darkness myself , but religion really really helped me deal with it .

2- get busier and busier with a social life . Not to cover the core reason for depression. But to let your brain work effectively in various directions so that when you think of the core problem you can think of healthy solutions.

3 - Re examine your priorities and expectations from life and yourself and all those around you. Redefine them and know in your heart that you will stick to your new notions.

4- Get your Vit D and blood levels tested . If either of these are low , get yourself treated .

5- Eat loads of dates , they are a very good remedy for curing minor depression.

If nothing works , time to definitely go see your doctor and get some medication for it .

Re: Treating Depression

Dua is a dua . Just always ask Allah to bless you with "sakina" on your heart . It means peace in your heart .

Re: Treating Depression

Its very easy to say and much too difficult to do , what I am about to say !

Dont let one person get on to your nerves so much so that it starts affecting your mental or physical health. Muhabbat apni jagaa , but, health is a blessing that is next to none. The day health leaves us , you might find that everyone around you will be become materialistic for their own well being . Who will care for you?

Realistically , we humans are very self centered by nature. There fore always remember , its best to prioritize your health over the day to day issues connected to that one person .

Good luck in dealing with every thing . Do it bravely .

Re: Treating Depression

You are exactly right, as long as you stay healthy and strong you can deal with all sorts of adversities. Also as parents we need to stay healthy and strong for our children. I like to workout if I am feeling down. Working out releases endorphins same as antidepressants. Look in the mirror eery day and promise yourself that you will be happy, cheerful and charming..self talk creates miracles.

Re: Treating Depression

The power of dua can never be underestimated, however, our imaan keeps fluctuating and such moments tend to push toward darkness.

Stylobabe, hanks for the dua and I'll be sure t recite it often.

Any tips on staying strong amid the emotional storm or how not to let anyone get on your nerves?

Re: Treating Depression

No one ever had a happy life . There are always happy phases and sad phases . We just gotta fight them both . Happy phases are easy to handle .
Sad ones are just difficult and soul sucking times . real test for us and our capabilities . Depression comes in when we are giving up . So try to steer clear of that turn and remember the end goal in life .

Re: Treating Depression

but sad phases come so often :( more than happy ones...

Re: Treating Depression

Trust me , its the case with almost every one around you and me ! If you study religion , you will start realizing ( like i did ) that Allah tests us through Melancholy, sadness and that is the reason He advises us again and again and reminds us in the Quran that , patience is a key trait of a muslim . Glad tidings for the patient ones . Its a continuous message through Quran .

Happiness associated with a person or a thing will always have its down side . Its when we start finding happiness in what we have , is when we start feeling calm . as they say , make the best of what you have .

Re: Treating Depression

Sorry yaara , done mean to lecture or anything , its just that I know exactly what you mean and am trying to help you see the other perspective . I changed mine long time ago and have seen and felt such a difference in me Alhumdullillah .

Re: Treating Depression

please dont be sorry I really appreciate whatever you are saying because i really need it i have always been a v.positive person and helped ppl stay happy.....I want to stay that way but due to others I shouldnt be ruining my life right?should i stop caring if others are part of my life or not?hmmmm i will pm you abt it....

Re: Treating Depression

Style , I learnt the hard way , us , humans are very materialistic by nature . Some of us try to be nice all the time, but deep down we have all got that capacity to ignore and pick only what give us happiness.

When something starts breaking you apart , you need to act in self defence , even if that means protecting your heart and soul. So please know that there are consequences when we decide to distance with others , but if that distance is letting us remain happy. Nothing better than that.

Have a look at this: https://www.icsi.org/guideline_sub-pages/depression/diagnose_and_characterize_major_depressionpersistent_depressive_disorder_with_clinical_interview/

Seek professional help if it’s affecting your life, especially if it could affect your children in any way. I hate it when people say that if you immerse yourself in religion you won’t get depressed blabla. It’s not that simple and doesn’t work for everybody.
Don’t run towards medication, there are also other forms of treatment.
