it's so unfair to label UNEDUCATED "desi families" for having THIS attitude. In our MAle dominated society, it's a common practice, and I have seen many well educated & well off families having this attitude.
Solution to this problem? There is no magic cure which will fix it in a jiffy. Only a drastic change in our social system will make it happen, it will happen as it's a part of social evolution, but not very soon.
In my family, believe it or not, my sisters get all the prefered attention. (we belong to a rural area in Sindh and still my sisters, all three of them, got the best education even the men in urban areas dream of, & were given a free hand to enter in professional life). Unfortunately a family with PhD's and M Phil girls is not very apealing to our society and there is a downside. But again, when I look around, I thank Allah for giving us such parents, and accpet it as He knows the best.
