travelling with a baby-advice needed from mothers!

salamualikum people
i have just had baby, and i am going to be travelling to pakistan soon, he will be around 3 months when we travel and it will be my first time with him and i dont know how i am going to handle him on my own in the plane thourhgout the flight, espcially if i need to use the bathroom and things ?! and what about changing his nappy?

also i am breastfeeding so i dont know how i am going to do that in the plane ? i dont think i can get some sort of private corner to do that…

i really need some advice and tips on what i need to take with me and how to deal with him on the plane and also any essential things that i sould take for the baby during our stay in pak?

Re: travelling with a baby-advice needed from mothers!

Hopefully, you can get the “bulkhead” seat…do try for that. Its the first set of seats and has quite a bit of floor space in front of the seats. You’d be able to change baby on the floor, just get one of those foldable changing pads (they even sell disposable changing pads now). If you cant get the bulkhead seat, talk to the stewardess about it, she may help by asking another passenger to switch with you or find a spot for you to change baby.

I went on a similar trip and had one of those baby slings was wonderful. Here’s a link to see one type, but there are many different kinds.

Using one of these, you can take baby with you to the washroom pretty comfortably.
As far as feeding, you’ll have to rough it but if you wear a nursing top and use a blanket then chances are no one will even know that you’re feeding and even if they do, there wont be anything for them to see.
Hope this helps, have a great trip!

re changing, washrooms in the plane's also have the changing tables built in the walls, Also if its PIA then you may ask a stewardess she will help you. its gonna be just fine. don't worry about it too much, take lots of baby wipes and patience.

Breastfeeding is easy.
When you check in, tell them that you have an infant and would like a seat in the most secluded part of the plane away from the toilets and kitchen and probably a window seat and also advise them that you would if possible like a female passenger on the seat adjacent to you..

believe me, they do listen to such things.

Take a light blanket with you that you can cover yourself and the baby with while you are breastfeeding and wear a shirt that you can lift up rather then a buttoned one.
It offers more privacy.

As for bathroom visits, the flight attendants are trained in such things, whenever you have to go, just buzz 'em and they will watch the baby for you while you visit the toilets.

they probably wont hold the baby but you can place the baby on the seat and they'll just stand there and keep an eye.

Changing is not a problem, the toilets have large baby tables that you can place the him on to change him.

As for pakistan, just take plenty of medicines.
Most kids i know who visit pakistan get diarrehea.

Dont give him any water and if possible just bottled water.
Babies upto six months if being breastfed donot require water anyways.

Take plenty of diapers because they sell **** diapers over there.

Re: travelling with a baby-advice needed from mothers!

believe me...traveling with a baby this young is a breeze. i have 8 neices and nephews alhamdulillah and i have traveled with them. For the most part babies this young sleep most of the way. If they cry you can breatfeed them and they will be satisfied. As far as diaper changing they have diaper changing facilities on most planes now. wonderful thing is at this age you dont even need to feed them anything...just breastmilk so you dont have to drang anything extra with you. You can easily cover yourself with a light blanket when feeding....or you can buy a cover specifically meant for breastfeeding from babies-r-us or something.

also dont forget to breastfeed while taking off and landing to prevent discomfort in the babies ear.

good luck....InshAllah your travel will be easier then you think since a newborn is no where near as demanding as a toddler.

Devoted2Allah, wasslamualikum alal muslimeen

I love your user name, incredibly perfect.

Its means cimilar to Abdullah in arabic.

one of the two best names God loves most.

I hope you be well on your travel, and your child.

What others hav stated, is correct. Just go there frst and then see how it goes. A breeze usually.

If your worried, check the supervisons in place on the Plane's companies site, and ring for queries.

Thatll be best for yor heart and worry. Maybe they ll allow you extra comfort and ease.

Here is a site with some pretty not-so-bad nursing tops that can help make nursing very discrete…

Re: travelling with a baby-advice needed from mothers!

Hi,

We just came back from Pakistan with my two months old daughter. There is nothing to worry about travelling but take care during take off and landing, the baby must take pacifier in his/her mouth in order to prevent from ear pressure which is built during landing and take off. Ask for bassinet seat it helps but in our case it didn't but the crew of KLM is helpful they gave us a seat and my baby slept on that seat easily.

Put diapers, wipes, rash cream, pacifier, mineral water and milk powder and also few dresses of baby and one dress for yourself, some times baby split off milk so you can change your dress.

Try to use imported mineral water by your self becoz you are breast feeding, as much you take care of your feed the baby will be ok. Use breast pump, or you can use feeding umbrella (which covers completely) to feed your baby easily.
Best of luck.

jazakAllah for all the tips, they are really helpful! i think i will buy one of them baby carriers.....what about machar (mosquitoes) and things at this time in pak (august-sep) ? should i take anything to protect the baby ?

Re: travelling with a baby-advice needed from mothers!

Yes thats a good idea but I think your little one is too young for the repellent sprays. Here is a website that sells net covers for strollers and car seats, you can get the mosquito-net type cover, I think they have these in regular baby stores too. Have a wonderful trip!

Re: travelling with a baby-advice needed from mothers!

The best thing for mosquitos are those oil warmers that they sell in Pakistan. I forget the name of it....but it's just like those Glade Plug-Ins air fresheners that we have here....with the liquid oil botter thingy. They were great. The mats were garbage.
