Travelling in the US

What are the options apart from air travel? For instance lets say if someone wanted to go from Redmond, WA to Ann Arbor, MI or Los Angeles, CA.

Is bus travel safe? What are the rates? Has anyone used bus travel before?

Oh and how easy is it to get a driver’s licence?

Re: Travelling in the US

There is no way you should travel from Redmond to Ann Arbor by anything but air. Its 2200 miles, more distance than between Dubai and Kathmandu.

Between Redmond to LA, you can take Grey Hound bus but i wont suggest it. You can drive but its 21 hours non stop journey.

You can travel by train only if you have enough time and money. Train is the slowest form of public transportation in USA

Re: Travelling in the US

Driving to Cali will be real fun... I'd luv it!! But ya, it'll take some time for you to get the license, may be around 2 months if you are very good!!

Re: Travelling in the US

It's okay. I only thought about anything other than air travel since I thought there is no airport in Spokane. I just found out there is and I could go to LA with one stop in just 130 dollars so I am good.

Re: Travelling in the US

Spokane! :hmmm:

where did Spokane come in the picture from? For Redmond, you need Seattle airport (Seatac)

Re: Travelling in the US

It's okay it took me an year to get my Dubai licence albeit in manual, so even if it would take me 2 months for automatic that still is better!

Re: Travelling in the US

No I want to study in Spokane. I only said Redmond because someone lives there. I thought there won’t be any airport in Spokane so I would have to use the nearest airport which I did found out to be Seatac, by using a bus or a taxi to reach there.

Re: Travelling in the US

as you said earlier, Spokane has its own airport - its a big city.

Re: Travelling in the US

:hmmm:

Re: Travelling in the US

I was browsing Expedia for flights to and from Spokane and found it's the second largest city of WA. I thought it to be something small in size.

Re: Travelling in the US

Ummm... 2 months if she's very good? I don't get what that means.
If you fail the computer-based test or the road test, you don't get the license. If you pass, you get it immediately provided you're a green card holder or citizen.

Now in your case, it will an F-1 visa right? or will it be J-1? In most states the minimum requirements are that you must be able to prove through legal documents..... your full legal name, identity, age, and lawful presence in the United States. Usually your passport with picture, F-1 visa and I-94 will work but again some states require you to have an SSN (Social security number) too. For H1 or H4 visa holders, they mail the driver's license to your home (after verifying your documentation with USCIS) so it may take 3-4 weeks .... I think its the same case for student visa holders, not sure though.

Which state are you going to be studying in? You should check the DMV website of that state.

Re: Travelling in the US

Oh and another thing, if you already have a local driving license (from Dubai or any other place), bring that with you… it will be easier getting a driver’s license (again depending on the state you’re going to). I had to get mine from Florida and they made me take a 4 hour class on Drug and Alcohol Traffic awareness or something like that… waste of time & money. I wish I had the sense to take my local driver’s license from Karachi, but I didn’t and it had already expired :hinna:

MEGA bus is better than grayhound

Re: Travelling in the US

It really depends on where you are planning to go in the US. Buses in general are fine, but a plane is faster and more efficient. How long are you planning on being in the US? Are you going to be attending school?

Re: Travelling in the US

Bus is pretty safe. If your going to michi from wash then you can either take a couple of different buses (which would really just suck) or either train it. Flight is an option too. If you book early enough it’s probably like 250’ish both ways.

Getting a license varies a bit state to state. In general you take a class and then test. If you have a foreign license the procedures can vary a bit. You can check out Documents for proof of identity | Washington State Department of Licensing i guess for more info

Wash to Cali is probably a fun ride. Plus you have a car and can do stuff. Wa to Mich is a cool ride as long as your not alone. Most of the way is filled with paindo areas so speed limits are higher and such. Plus it’s pretty nice. You could probably take a detour and go through Yellow Stone Nat’l Park..but it’d take a huge chunk of your time

Re: Travelling in the US

Re: Travelling in the US

Cooooooll… how much vacation do you have dude.. you gotta have a lot of days to cover and really enjoy that!!

Re: Travelling in the US

Btw, there is a way out here that if you bring international license (which I believe is very easy to get), as per law you can drive in US for one year. Many of my friends and relatives have lived for an year like that :)
