Have anybody done or doing travelling based job?. Our company’s director for North America operations asked me if i would be interested in working at different locations throughout US and Canada. Mainly Midwest US and central and eastern Canada locations. I asked him how is the job like..he told me it can get stressful..basically we just had good conversation about this. Now, position is NOT offered to me yet..but there is possibility that i will. Anyway…share your experience(s) please..
Re: Travelling based Job..
depends on your career goals and if the job aligns with your ultimate career goals. I would personally jump at the chance purely cuz i love travelling and any job where i can travel is a bonus. all the best brother:k:
Re: Travelling based Job..
Thats nice of him to ask if you're interested. I suppose it depends on your personal preferences. Travelling can be fun for some people, but it could get lonely if its for extended periods of time. Dealing with that plus stress on the job can make it difficult. On the other hand, it is good experience.
Re: Travelling based Job..
I would take this job for sure because I love travelling
Best of Luck brother!
Re: Travelling based Job..
Depends on where you are in your life and exactly how much travelling is required. Most of my friends and family who travel for work actually hate it - but they are family people and miss being with their family.
If you're single (which we all know you are) - travelling could be interesting, but don't expect it to be glamourous - it loses its lustre pretty quickly when you spend days/weeks living out of a suitcase, eating take-out and visiting cities in the back of beyond. Most travel doesn't take you to big urban cities or scenic cities.
Nevertheless, as an experience - totally worth it, since it can help build your resume and career prospects and yes, you'll get to see new places on the company's dime.
Re: Travelling based Job..
My husband is a consultant and travels Mon-Thu most weeks. I'll try to list the pros and cons
Pros
1. More variety in work experience than a regular office job, more exposure, better opportunities.
2. Meet new people within the company and outside, better networking.
3. Get to see different places, experience new cultures
4. Airline and hotel points (they add up really quickly!)
Cons
1. Being away from family, especially hard if you have small kids
2. Travel woes (I've lost count of the number of times my husband was stranded at the airport due to bad weather)
3. Difficult to have a healthy lifestyle with all the eating out, hard to stay fit, added stress. This is the thing I worry about most with my husband :(
4. Easy to lose touch with friends because you're spending weekends either too tired, or catching up with your own spouse/kids.
Once the novelty of travel wears off, the sacrifice will seem worth it only if you're really enjoying the job. If you love what you're doing, you will not mind the travel as much.
Another thing I've realized - the "seeing new places" gets old very soon. You're excited about visiting a place for the first time, but if you're travelling there every few weeks, all you want to do is just relax in your hotel room at the end of a long day.
Good luck, whatever you decide :)
Re: Travelling based Job..
Well job pretty much aligns for what i do. Infact, i will practically be his assistant. Or say shadow if he is not around much. That would definitely add up on my experience as well. Thanks bro!
Thanks MG. Well i travelled a lot to US in the past for other jobs i have held. But mostly for conferences. And i could relate what ya saying that..it can get lonely. And ya it can..and i have been through it. I have stayed in State of Wisconsin number of times..and used to get super bored. Luckily..made few friends..including some desis…but other than that..it was cool. Felt good while traveling. Indeed a good experience.
You’re absolutely right about missing family and friends. And when speaking to Director dude..tha tis what he was telling that..he usually has to leave without proper notice. And miss his family..and he was telling me that..it might be ok..if ya’re single..but if ya’re married then it might not be that easy. But if i get a wife who is understanding..then it should be ok eh?. not sure. But if this is offered..i would take it. This would be plus point in my resume.
Thank you for writing such a detailed response. Really appreciate it!. I love my job for sure. I was going to say about taking out food and healthy life-style..that i am really careful about. I can live on those noodles and company for sure!. And i am not married..so i think i might be ok for bit. But then..mom and dad are on my case already..lets see how does that go.

No problem :)
If you're not married, I'd say now's your chance to give travel a shot. Go for it! You can always switch back to a less-travel job in a year or two.
Re: Travelling based Job..
Ok...Alhamdulli'lah! .so i am actually just been offered that job. Woho!. Not only that....i am actually going to be international corporate trainer as well. Thinking of sending me to Pak Islamabad and Lahore in addition to traveling within US, Canada and UK. So i am actually very excited.
