The DVD player in the car is a lifesaver. Other than that, I buy toys (for the round trip) from the dollar store and hand them out whenever they act cranky. This works great in airplanes too. Snacks are a must along with stops on teh way. Though I must say, we never get out to sightsee, just to eat and refersh ourselves but it helps.
The dramomine is good too.
