Traveling with kids

We’re traveling over the coming weekend by air, and for a few hours by road. The girls are carrying their “purses” which have notepads and pencils, chapstick, a book, coloring books & crayons. All mini size to fit in their purses.

Any other suggestions to keep them busy?

Please share how you make travel enjoyable for your kids, different ages, different stages.

Re: Traveling with kids

for me portable DVD player rocks.mawiz is fond of watching cartoons,so he usually stay busy in that if we are travelling by road.then storybooks also works:)

Re: Traveling with kids

We usually take our laptop so the kids watch their movies on that. But sometimes it's a headache to take it out on the plane. I think I should invest in a portable DVD player!

Re: Traveling with kids

We got a portable DVD player for our big road trip out west...20 days on the road! It was a great, wonderful thing to have! They arent expensive either, ours was I think 75, its very small and fits on the armrest between driver and passenger seat. We did alot of sightseeing and ogling the scenery and talking about what state we were driving thru...but dvd player was a big thing for them too.

Re: Traveling with kids

Niksik - My older one loves playdo. They have smaller packs.

Go to the $ dollar store and find things like little puzzles, slinky (my daughters loves these), stickers

DVD player is a must on long drives (more than 5 hours)

Don't forget snacks like juice boxes, chips and cookies just incase they get hungry

Re: Traveling with kids

as njgirl said, Go to dollar shop and get 5/10 games, stickers etc.

We try to avoid DVD player if its not a really long drive (i.e 8-10 hours). Thing is that they watch the TV at home all the time anyway. Point to go by car is that they can enjoy things other than cartoons and video games while traveling although we keep both in trunk for "just in case" situation.

One solution that we have found to keep them happy on long trip is to STOP whenever and where ever they want. They see a Zoo sign and want to go there, we take them there for quick trip, They see playland sign and want to go there, we take them there for a quick session and this keeps them happy for next lap of the trip. Although I understand its not possible on all trips but we try to enjoy the driving as much as we look forward to the place we are going to.

Re: Traveling with kids

The DVD player in the car is a lifesaver. Other than that, I buy toys (for the round trip) from the dollar store and hand them out whenever they act cranky. This works great in airplanes too. Snacks are a must along with stops on teh way. Though I must say, we never get out to sightsee, just to eat and refersh ourselves but it helps.

The dramomine is good too.

Re: Traveling with kids

Luckily we don't have any issues with motion sickness during flights or leveled drives so I don't have to worry about that.

Thanks for all the suggestions. I have tons of stuff now. Hope the girls have fun.

Re: Traveling with kids

If you dont want to have to carry the dvd player...the small ipod video or even some phones have the video player in them...I use that at times. For me its a hassle trying to carry a lot with 2 kids.

Re: Traveling with kids

Asky, I have a PSP with many games for the kids. I forgot all about that because hubby had been playing with it and had it hidden in his nightstand :emmy:

tell me nikki do galz play with PSP:hmmm: imaan sai i would have prefer dolls over PSP:D

Re: Traveling with kids

SheeN, they love to play with it. My hubby introduced them to these nifty little gadgets very early on. The older one is really good at the car racing games and this truck monster game (dunno the name).

Hmm, how about some games that would occupy the children? Such as cards, Connect 4, Blurt, Taboo, 20 questions, etc. It's best to use games that are simple......don't have several pieces, or too much equipment, because that way there is LITTLE clean-up involved. Something that can be played with ease. And if the kids are visiting relatives and friends that have kids of their own...then they can take the games with them.

Re: Traveling with kids

OK so I'm back and the things that worked best were the coloring books and play dough. I will post pictures later but even hubby and I got busy with the play dough!
