Traveling with Infants

Hello

I will be traveling for the first time with my 18 mth old son. We plan on flying to my sisters house in a month. My concern is what type of documentation should i keep with me? Is a copy of his birth certificate sufficient? or do i have to take the original? Also will i be able to take his stroller and car seat with me in the plane?

Any helpful tips will be appreciated

Thanks!!!

Re: Traveling with Infants

If your are travelling from one country to another your son either has to have a passport or at least his name should be mentioned in your passport (in some countries that is not possible though).

Re: Traveling with Infants

Thanks Umer.. but no we are not going to another country.. just another state.. NJ to be specific :)

Also we have applied for a passport for him... since we might go to pakistan soon.

Re: Traveling with Infants

ohh come on ppl... i really need to know about the stroller and the car seat. I've called usairways but they are soo busy i can't get anyone :(

Re: Traveling with Infants

You don't need any identification if you haven't bought him a seperate seat & he will be on your lap. If you have bought him a separate seat, I would take some identification. A birth certificate would do. Best is to contact the specific airline people. Usually if you haven't bought him a seat and he is** near **two years old, they want some document that states he is not over two.

You can take in the stroller and car seat with you. They will give you a pink slip for the stroller and a copy for you to keep. Right before you enter the plane, fold the stroller and give it to the ground crew and they will bring it back to you once you land, so you don't have to carry him while you want around the airport. If you have a connecting flight they will bring it up during your stay at the connecting airport.

If you have bought a seat for him, then I will suggest taking the car seat inside the plane, otherwise you will have to check it in. Misbah slept through the plane last time because she was in her car seat and comfortable. Otherwise she wants us to let her go, so she can run around the plane and if you don't then she cries.

Do take the car seat with you as you will need it once you get to your sister's place. Unless she has an extra one handy.

Re: Traveling with Infants

ahmadjee... thank you soo much :) well you are right i have not bought a seat for him since he is under 2 and the flight will be only for an hour.

I'm kind of nervous since this will be my first time alone traveling with him... i just feel so much better when my husband is with me.
so misbah slept thru the flight... their angels when they sleep. its just when they get up...they transform into little cute monsters. :D

Re: Traveling with Infants

I would suggest not to let him go to sleep before the flight and let him play in the airport so he gets tired. As soon as you get on the flight and he starts getting cranky, give him milk - lots of it. He will go to sleep for the rest of the flight and it will be all peaceful.

Does he still take a pacifier? They generally help with the ear popping problem in infants but cab try to rub behind his ears if he gets fussy at take off or landing.

These days the flights are full but you might just get lucky and get an empty seat next to you but they won't let you take the car seat inside unless they know for sure that you have an extra seat. So, just play it by the ear and check-in the car seat in if the flight is full or keep it handy if you think its your lucky day.
