Traveling with a five week old ...

… to Pakistan IA next week.

My questions:

  1. Going by Qatar Airways and there would be a 3 hour stopover at Doha airport. Should I take his pushchair with me? Though frankly speaking I wont be needing it much in Pakistan.
  2. Am BFing my baby exclusively and I dont plan to start on formula anytime soon at least to prevent any infections. But I have one or two weddings there to attend. What should I do? He asks for a feed almost every hour.
  3. He has his immunisations due at 8 weeks. But since I won’t be here should I get them done from Pak? He had his BCG shot here but no other vaccinations yet.
  4. Any other useful tips/things I’d be needing for myself and the baby.

I saw sahar’s thread on traveling but it has more info about toddlers’ travel.

Re: Traveling with a five week old ...

**as far as immunizations are concerned, i would suggest that you get it done where you live because your home-country may NOT accept at school level when time comes for checking of immunization records. at different levels of schooling, parents are required to submit the immunization records to the school board. you may run into problems then.

Re: Traveling with a five week old ...

I talked to my GP. She asked me to take the child's health record book with me and get them from there and have them taken down on the book OR wait until 10 weeks when I get back and get them done then. So I was confused what should be done.

Re: Traveling with a five week old ...

i think it's best to wait until you return. two weeks won't make a big difference. better be safe! :)

Re: Traveling with a five week old ...

I'm pretty sure there are strollers available at Doha airport. You can always call the airline and ask if they provide one.

For the Bfing...you can buy a good quality pump, that way you can take the bottle with you and not have to worry about bfing at the weddings.

Since the baby will be bfing you don't have to worry food for him/her, just make sure you drink bottled water. If you do choose to use the bump make sure you wash the babies bottles with bottled water.....take a microwave sanitizer, if you have a microwave available to you.

Take diapers with you, I've heard of babies developing rashes from the diapers there.

As for the flight. Feed the baby during take off and landing....I can't stress this enough, it'll really help with the babies ears.

I have heard strollers being available at Doha airport but my only concern would be they might be just the umbrella strollers and its not like he can even sit at 5 weeks so you may not be able to utilize them.. how about a baby carrier for your lil bean?

  1. Am BFing my baby exclusively and I dont plan to start on formula anytime soon at least to prevent any infections. But I have one or two weddings there to attend. What should I do? He asks for a feed almost every hour.

Buy a good pump and pump after you are done nursing him.. and then use that pumped milk when out and about!

  1. He has his immunisations due at 8 weeks. But since I won't be here should I get them done from Pak? He had his BCG shot here but no other vaccinations yet.

If the baby's doc is okay with vaccination at 10 weeks, you can wait for that.

  1. Any other useful tips/things I'd be needing for myself and the baby.

diapers, wipes, bottle (if you plan to give him pumped milk but make sure you have a variety or at least start using before you leave so its not new for the babt) formula can (just in case of an emergency- better to be prepared), lots of bibs! and probably keep some sugar syrup for landing/take off since you wont be able to bf him at that time so at least he can suck on your sugar syrup dipped finger to avoid ear ache! (we did that during my baby's circumcision and it went just fine)

Re: Traveling with a five week old ...

  1. Qatar will most likely insist on your checking your stroller at the gate. In Doha they provide their own strollers for children to use. GTG is right, they are umbrella strollers. For that reason you may be able to insist that they give you your own stroller in Doha. But if you do that, make sure you remind the crew multiple times.
  2. You could pump and bottle feed the pumped milk. Or you deal with the inconvenience of breastfeeding during the wedding events. Or you give formula during those feeds. That's a tough one.
  3. Take diapers, wipes, lotions, blankets, and lots of changes of clothes and lots of options for layering.

Re: Traveling with a five week old ...

BTW, if I were you, I would take some formula, just in case.

Re: Traveling with a five week old …
