Traveling during 1st trimester....

Before everyone starts complaining about an older thread “Traveling during pregnancy”

My question is different…that older thread talks about mostly air-travel later in the pregnancy…

I want to know how safe is it to travel via car for a longer stretch (say 6-7 hours drive) during the 1st trimester…given the norm that the first 12 weeks are most risky!

Re: Traveling during 1st trimester…

it really differs person to person but generally its a no no…

see… pregnant women dont feel pregnant nro look it in the first trimester so they overlook heavy physical labour and other exhausting things .. cuz well.. they feel no different (other than the throwing up and nausea)

but thats where they are wrong. the first trimester is the most risky. i remember giving this explanation to a newly pregnant friend wanting to go hiking

ure baby is the size of a pin ball in a pin ball machine. ure insides being the pin ball table. when u get pregnant, the baby lies safely where its mean to.. cushioned and ever so fragile. the slightest jerk or hard bump could make it go rolling out of its cushion into trouble.
so no i wouldnt recommend a 7 hour drive anywhere for the time being. u can travel all u want when u have ure baby… right now is the time to be selfless and just take care of ure package

Re: Traveling during 1st trimester....

I had to travel twice during my 3rd month of pregnancy, both were 8-9 hour drives. I had asked my midwife before going and she said it's very safe as long as you keep yourself well hyderated and take frequent breaks every 1-2 hours to walk and go to bathroom. My pregnancy is normal though. Btw, the long drive did cause really bad nausea and back pain but no medical complications, alhumdulillah. Do ask your doctor before you go!!

Re: Traveling during 1st trimester....

yes like khawa said it depends from person to person, don't go hiking or get involved in any other extreme sport! i took frequent trips in my first and 3rd trimester (flying and by car) i felt fine.

but last year when i was with expecting my first child I was 11 weeks when we flew to california which was supposed to be a 5 hr (max) flight, but we missed our connection in buffalo so we ended up in detriot, from there to dallas then phoenix, and finally reaching LA. in all this chaos it took almost 20+ hour to get to LA and i was so dead tired that i couldn't even walk any longer! but alhamdulliah I survived. I hope this never happens to anyone else EVER! especially if you pregnant! not trying to scare you or anything but ask your OB, he/she can tell you for sure if it's safe to fly/take a road trip.

Re: Traveling during 1st trimester....

Yep, do ask your OB/GYN..... if you decide to go ahead, do take frequent breaks, stop and walk around a little bit, keep yourself well-hydrated and travel in a comfortable car. Better yet, take a nap in the car if you can :p

Re: Traveling during 1st trimester....

6-7 hours should be fine as long as you take breaks and stay hydrated.

Re: Traveling during 1st trimester....

yup i took a 10 hr long road trip during my second month. stayed at my mom's house for only 3 days and then continued on to another 8 hr long trip to cousin's house, and next day a 5 hr long trip to canada! n came back with only one day to rest/unpack before goin back to work. although i was perfectly fine beforehand, somehow this trip triggered extreme nausea and food aversions that then lasted all througout the first trimester :( but thankfully baby did not suffer because of this :) i guess i was quite ignorant because i thought its only first trimester and it doesn't matter what i do.

Re: Traveling during 1st trimester....

Hmmm...so it varies pregnancy to pregnancy....

Re: Traveling during 1st trimester....

i travelled for 9-12 hrs too during my pregnancies. even hicking, biking, swimming, raking, snow removal i hav done them all. i think u should act normal n just rest when u need to. like as long as ur body allows go with the flow.

Re: Traveling during 1st trimester....

Dr. begum says that that is fine, but stop and walk around for 5-10 minutes ever 1-2 hours and drink water. The risk here is a blood clot, if you walk around and get your blood flowing ever couple of hours, it prevents blood clots.

Re: Traveling during 1st trimester....

^Thank you :)

Re: Traveling during 1st trimester....

Take breaks to walk around, drink enough water and you should be fine. The only thing you are not recommended to do during pregnancy is play contact sports. People don't miscarry because of strenuous activities and bed rest does not prevent miscarriages. Even air travel is fine even up till 37 for uncomplicated pregnancies!
