Traveling back to US on expired Green Card

Does anyone know what would happen if a person with a recently expired Green card travels from Canada back to the US? My cousin didn’t realize this until she got to Canada and the immigration officer pointed it out. She is scheduled to return next week and doesn’t have time to apply for renewal while she is there.

I didn't know Green Cards expired? Didn't she convert to Passport?

Re: Traveling back to US on expired Green Card

the best bet is to go to the nearest consulate and consult them, alternatively, just travel to the border and see if she will be allowed in..

Re: Traveling back to US on expired Green Card

Ooh, I wouldn't travel to the border in hope. Things have tightened up in the US, I'd run to the nearest consulate and see what they can do. A friend of mine was turned back at the border in NY, simply because he'd been to Malaysia on his own and I was given all sorts of trouble in Miami because I had a Jordanian visa in my ppt.

Re: Traveling back to US on expired Green Card

I think they used to issue them for 10 years period, but after 911 they only issue with 2 years term after which you have to apply for renewal.

Re: Traveling back to US on expired Green Card

Yeah, we’re debating on it. Either go to the consulate or take a chance. I think the consulate will take some time to process the request.

Re: Traveling back to US on expired Green Card

Yes you’re right, things have realy tightened up recently especially for Pakistanis. Canada’s immigration was easy on her to let her go, but I think US folks may present a bigger problem.
