i loved italy, I spent one term studying there.
Noree it deoends how long you are going for.
If you have a week, you can have an great time in Italy even if you just skim through the cities.
fly into Rome, much to see there, u can do a 2 day trip out to Capri, stop on the way to Herclaneum and Pompei. you really need to stop at heculaneum and/or pompei for a few hours, u can leave Rome early morning and be in Capri by evening. pompei is right by naples, and then from naples you will take the fery to capri, dont waste time in naples.
take a night train, sleeper to Venice, spend a day there take a night train/sleeper back into Rome, unless you go to Florence instead and then spend a day there and take train it back to Rome.
This type of intenirary is built based on doing a lot of things in a short time, however if u want to really enjoy and take it easy, I would rather do rome/capri/pompei seprately, there is more than enough add ischia to your itinerary.
and then do venice/florence/pisa etc as a different trip. you can do milan too, but I am not a big fan of Milan overall.
