Travel Ban on 18 MPs lifted
Islamabad |By Shahid Hussain | 12-01-2003
The government of Prime Minister Mir Zafarullah Khan Jamali has removed names of 18 legislators from a list of people banned from leaving the country under the military regime, officials said yesterday.
The previous military government included the politicians, two of whom are now in Jamali’s cabinet, on an exit control list (ECL) as they were under investigation over allegations of corruption and bank loan defaults.
The politicians were allowed to run in the October 10 elections despite the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) investigation. Most won seats in the National Assembly while the others were elected to provincial legislatures.
An interior ministry statement said the government had deleted names of all sitting members of parliament from the ECL and that they included members from both the treasury and opposition benches.
The statement did not give the number of the legislators or their names. It was also silent about the current status of the investigation that NAB had initiated against them during the three-year military rule. According to official sources Interior Minister Faisal Saleh Hayat and Minister for Power Aftab Sherpao are among those whose names have been removed from the ECL.
Hayat and 17 other members of the National Assembly had deserted the Pakistan People’s Party Parliamentarians and formed a separate group under the nomenclature of PPP Patriots.
