Sometimes the only way to save a life is by transplanting an organ. Kidney, liver and heart transplants are quite common and successful.
Unfortunately, many people die these days due to shortage of donors; there’s a huge gap between the demand and the supply.
Let’s narrow it down to our community for the sake of discussion as most of us are from the Indo-Pak subcontinent orginally. Do you think this issue stems from religious beliefs or fear or a proper system of organ donation?
I think it stems from lack of education regarding donations. Especially kidney donations. My mother would not have been able to see some of my teenage years if it wasnt for her kidney transplant, however, the kidney didnt last long as it was from a white doner. I dont know too much about the reasoning behind this, but I do remember the renal specialist at the hospital I worked at explaining how a kidney from someone who shared the same ethnicity as my mother would have lasted a little longer.
My daddi always says that the reason we have two kidneys is because one is spare. My younger sister only has one functioning kidney and apart from the odd urinary tract infections she is in mashallah perfect health.
Not in the U.K. My sister had a very successful kidney transplant last year. Her in laws wanted her to go to Pakistan to 'buy' a kidney, she told them to naff off.
